The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/\">Met Office<\/a> explains&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/shutterstock_143592034.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2403\" title=\"shutterstock_143592034\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/shutterstock_143592034.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/shutterstock_143592034.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/shutterstock_143592034-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>First of all, it\u2019s important to stress the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/country\/uk\/\">UK<\/a> is not being \u2018hit\u2019 by a weather bomb \u2013 the track of the low pressure system is well to the north of the UK, on roughly the same latitude as Iceland. We\u2019re feeling its influence remotely.<\/p>\n<p>This means we are not getting the very strongest winds associated with this system, but far north-western parts of the UK are seeing winds in the 70-80mph range as forecast. Further south the winds are much less strong \u2013 so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/london\/\">London<\/a>, for example, is unlikely to see even gale force gusts and mean wind speeds will be much lower.<\/p>\n<p>Another point is that the \u2018bomb\u2019 element, the rapid deepening of the low pressure as explained below, happened on Monday \u2013 and it\u2019s now just like any other powerful Atlantic low. In fact, the weather we\u2019ll experience today is nothing unusual for the time of year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what is a \u2018weather bomb?\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A \u2018weather bomb\u2019 is more usually referred to as \u2018explosive cyclogenesis\u2019 and is a meteorological term describing the rapid fall in central pressure of a depression (or low pressure) \u2013 it has to fall by 24 millibars in 24 hours in our latitudes to meet the criterion.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways a \u2018bomb\u2019 can be seen as simply a more powerful, more intense version of the kind of Atlantic low pressure systems that normally affect the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Climatologically speaking, explosive cyclogenesis events, or bombs, tend to occur most frequently over sea near major warm ocean currents, for example over the North Atlantic Ocean near the Gulf Stream or over the Western Pacific Ocean near the Kuroshio Current.<\/p>\n<p>An explosive cyclogenesis event in these regions would then tend to happen as a particularly intense jet stream (which is a narrow band of strong winds high up in the atmosphere) interacts with an existing, and often weak, low pressure lingering near one of these warm ocean currents.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, as with so many things in meteorology, it is the coming together of multiple ingredients that allow a \u2018bomb\u2019 to develop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How many \u2018bombs\u2019 a year \u2013 and what is the impact?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are gaps in the global observational record, so it\u2019s difficult to give a definitive number of how many \u2018weather bombs\u2019 are seen globally each year. However, recent estimates based on a twenty to thirty year dataset suggest there are somewhere between 45 and 65 explosive cyclogenesis events per year, with more \u2018bombs\u2019 occurring in the northern than southern hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s important to realise that the definition of a \u2018bomb\u2019 is somewhat arbitrary and \u2018just a number&#8217;; a depression deepening only slightly less than 24hPa in 24 hours will still be a powerful depression more than capable of producing severe weather.<\/p>\n<p>Another important point is that the track a \u2018bomb\u2019 takes relative to the British Isles, and at what stage of its development it does so, are key to its impact on UK weather \u2013 in general the closer the \u2018bomb\u2019 tracks to the British Isles the more severe the weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Met Office<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With strong winds affecting parts of the country today (Wednesday 10 December), there has been a lot of talk about \u2018weather bombs\u2018 \u2013 but what are they and what do they mean for our weather?
