{"id":1920,"date":"2014-07-28T20:44:52","date_gmt":"2014-07-28T20:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/?p=1920"},"modified":"2014-07-28T20:44:52","modified_gmt":"2014-07-28T20:44:52","slug":"thunderstorms-bring-intense-rainfall-to-parts-of-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/thunderstorms-bring-intense-rainfall-to-parts-of-england\/","title":{"rendered":"Thunderstorms bring intense rainfall to parts of England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning (Monday 28 July) has seen some intense downpours across parts of southeast England.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_68817700.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1921\" title=\"shutterstock_68817700\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_68817700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_68817700.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_68817700-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They developed across parts of East Anglia in the early hours of the morning, with further areas of heavy showers across Sussex, Surrey, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/kent_gb\/\">Kent<\/a> and the south of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/london\/\">London<\/a> following later.<\/p>\n<p>The showers were very heavy in places with thunderstorms, hail, and torrential rain reported, giving high rainfall totals and localised flooding in some areas.<\/p>\n<p>The high rainfall totals were caused by an area of low pressure and a plume of warm air that moved in from the near continent accompanied by light winds, meaning that the showers were slow moving.<\/p>\n<p>Several spots have seen more than half of their average monthly rainfall for the whole of July in just one hour.<\/p>\n<p>Below you can see some of the highest recorded hourly rainfall totals from Environment Agency rain gauges through the morning of Monday 28<sup>th<\/sup>&Acirc;&nbsp;July 2014:\n<\/p>\n<table width=\"382\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"123\">Great Dunmow<\/td>\n<td width=\"63\">Essex<\/td>\n<td width=\"190\">43 mm (4am to 5am)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Isfield<\/td>\n<td>Sussex<\/td>\n<td>37 mm (8.30am to 9:30am)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ardingly<\/td>\n<td>Sussex<\/td>\n<td>35 mm (8.30am to 9:30am)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Santon Downham<\/td>\n<td>Suffolk<\/td>\n<td>33mm (3am to 4am)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Weirwood<\/td>\n<td>Sussex<\/td>\n<td>28 mm (9am to 10am)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Northolt<\/td>\n<td>London<\/td>\n<td>20mm (7am to 8am)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The band of showery rain is now easing, but a&Acirc;&nbsp;<a title=\"Met Office weather warnings\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/public\/weather\/warnings\/#?tab=map&amp;map=Warnings&amp;zoom=5&amp;lon=-3.50&amp;lat=55.50&amp;fcTime=1406502000\">yellow warning<\/a>&Acirc;&nbsp;for rainfall remains in place for the south east of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/country\/uk\/\">UK<\/a> as the risk of seeing some further isolated downpours remains.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the far south east of England could see further persistent and perhaps locally heavy rain later today and overnight, with parts of Kent and Sussex most at risk.
