{"id":1283,"date":"2014-02-01T20:41:56","date_gmt":"2014-02-01T20:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/?p=1283"},"modified":"2014-02-01T21:23:40","modified_gmt":"2014-02-01T21:23:40","slug":"tornadoesin-britain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/tornadoesin-britain\/","title":{"rendered":"Tornadoes in Britain?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Saturday we saw a number of heavy rain showers group together in what is known as a &#8216;squall line&#8217; \u2013 a narrow band of thunderstorms, intense rain, hail, and frequent lightning accompanied by brief but very strong gusts of wind and possibly tornadoes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/shutterstock_68817700.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1284\" title=\"shutterstock_68817700\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/shutterstock_68817700-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/shutterstock_68817700-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/shutterstock_68817700.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The squall line swept across <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/wales_gb\/\">Wales<\/a> and then moved south east across southern parts of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/country\/uk\/\">England<\/a> \u2013 bringing about 6mm of rain to places in a very short period of time with gusts of wind of around 60mph or more in places.<\/p>\n<p>It also had the characteristics of a cold front, with the temperature ahead of it being around 11\u00b0C, falling to 7\u00b0C once the squall line had passed.<\/p>\n<p>There have been reports of possible weak tornadoes from some locations, however it\u2019s hard to verify them without pictures or footage because these features are generally too small to be picked up by satellites or weather observation equipment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also worth noting that squally winds can often be mistaken for tornadoes because these gusts can be sudden and strong \u2013 potentially causing very localised damage.<\/p>\n<p>You can see more information on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/learning\/learn-about-the-weather\/weather-phenomena\/tornado\">tornadoes<\/a> and\u00a0how they form\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/learning\/learn-about-the-weather\/weather-phenomena\/tornado\/how-tornadoes-are-formed\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Met Office<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Saturday we saw a number of heavy rain showers group together in what is known as a &#8216;squall line&#8217; \u2013 a narrow band of thunderstorms, intense rain, hail, and frequent lightning accompanied by brief but very strong gusts of wind and possibly tornadoes.
