Started in 2009,\u00a0MSC’s Cruises<\/a>\u00a0collaboration with the\u00a0United Nations Children\u2019s Fund<\/a> (UNICEF) has contributed to building hope for children in need around the world. In the past four years, as part of the MSC Cruises’\u00a0\u201cGet on Board for Children\u201d<\/a>\u00a0initiative, and thanks to the generosity of MSC\u00a0Cruises\u2019 guests,\u00a0more than \u20ac2.8m\u00a0was donated to UNICEF in Brazil<\/a> to combat poverty and inequality by helping ensure children in 126 vulnerable communities of Rio de Janeiro<\/a> and S\u00e3o Paol<\/a>o achieve access to a quality education.<\/p>\n

1 January 2014\u00a0saw the start of\u00a0a new life-saving partnership between MSC Cruises\u00a0and\u00a0UNICEF\u00a0aiming at providing assistance to malnourished children by delivering Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF)\u2013 like Plumpy\u2019Nut\u00ae\u2013 to treat severe malnutrition in developing countries and in countries affected by crisis situations.<\/p>\n

Malnutrition and famine claim the lives of over a million children every year and stunt the physical and mental development of many more. Severe acute malnutrition has traditionally required hospitalisation, however RUTFs can be eaten straight from the sachet. They can be given to children without being mixed in water so they can work in any situation at home and without medical supervision.<\/p>\n

\u2018Around\u00a0three sachets a day for four to six weeks can put a child out of harm\u2019s way and with the generosity of our on board guests we will do our best to save and improve as many lives as possible,\u2019 said\u00a0Gianni\u00a0Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises. \u2018MSC Cruises believes that global leadership brings increased responsibility towards the physical and human environments in which it operates, and as such we are proud to have strengthened our partnership with UNICEF. By donating just\u00a0\u20ac 1 (or US$ 1,50)\u00a0to \u201cGet on Board for Children\u201d\u00a0MSC guests can help buy three meals of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food.\u00a0A full treatment to save a child\u2019s life in four to six weeks costs approximately \u20ac42.<\/p>\n

In addition to donations received from guests, MSC Cruises will also organise edutainment activities for children on board, raising awareness about UNICEF\u2019s work and children\u2019s needs around the world.<\/p>\n
