January Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

What's the weather like in Naples in January

Despite the fact the first month of the year is officially the coldest month in Naples, there is still much to see and do.

Temperature

The wintery scene is picturesque to say the least, and the average monthly temperature of 9°C is actually milder than many other cities in Europe at this time of year.

Sunshine Hours

Naples experiences a high of 13°C, with around 4 hours of sunshine per day on average, and reaches a low of a chilly 5°C at night, meaning a coat is certainly required for walking around during the evening.

Rainfall

A typical Mediterranean winter means rain isn't that plentiful during the colder months, and you can only expect around 80mm during the month on whole, affecting 11 days to some degree. This shouldn't stop you from sightseeing and exploring everything beautiful Naples has to offer however simply pack an umbrella and off you go!

Sea Temperature

One thing which isn't advisable during January however is anything sea-related. The Mediterranean is a little chilly to say the least at this time of year, averaging only 15°C, meaning swimming is certainly best left until the summer months.

Naples Hotels for January

Royal Continental

January's cooler temperatures mean you will be needing somewhere cosy to base yourself when exploring everything Naples has to offer. Royal Continental ticks all those boxes, offering modern, comfortable rooms on a B&B basis, or an upgrade to a suite with a living room, overlooking the sea.

Hotel Ramada Naples

Alternatively, Hotel Ramada Naples is a very upmarket choice, and close to all public transport links, making sightseeing easy, as well as being close to the airport.

Hotel San Francesco Al Monte

If you want something extra special, check out Hotel San Francesco Al Monte, which is a former monastery renovated into a hotel. Here you can stay half board and enjoy the beautiful views from the grounds, before exploring the San Martino vineyard, to the rear of the building.

Bars and Restaurants

Caseificio Marigliano

The great thing about visiting any city in Italy is the cuisine; Italian food is arguably amongst the best in the world, and when tasted in its homeland, you can expect flavours which pop! When visiting Naples you should certainly call in to Caseificio Marigliano. This is one of the top rated restaurants in the whole city, and the buffalo mozzarella is certainly to be recommended. This is a hidden gem, but certainly one worth finding.

GioGio e Carmen Paninoteca e Crostoneria

Alternatively, if you're sightseeing and wanting to grab some food on the go, call in to GioGio e Carmen Paninoteca e Crostoneria, perfect for sandwiches and snacks on the move, or Daiquiri for one of the amazing desserts on the menu. Located on Via Prince, the cakes here are to die for!

Things to do in Naples in January

Enjoy Amalfi Tours

The first month of the year in Naples may be a little bit chilly, but that shouldn't stop you wrapping up warm and heading out to explore this beautiful city. A guided tour is without a doubt the best way to go about things, but don't forget the amazing scenery and locations which are just a stone's throw from the city, right on the beautiful Amalfi CoastEnjoy Amalfi Tours offer day tours to take you around some of those nearby locations, including a few activities to boost your day's entertainment, such as a tour of a winery and a few tasting opportunities, or a chance to make authentic limoncello. Pompeii and the beauty of the Amalfi coastline are also on the itinerary.

NapolinVespa Tour

Alternatively, you could stay within the heart of the city and tour the sights in a different way, perhaps on a Vespa or behind the wheel of a vintage Fiat! NapolinVespa Tour offer guided tours of the city in such a manner, and this is a fantastic idea for fans of these motors.

Teatro di San Carlo

There are obviously countless sights to see in Naples, but one which you should be heading to, especially whilst the winter weather is chilly and beautiful, is Teatro di San Carlo. This is the oldest working theatre in Europe, and is stunning in architecture and design, finally completed in 1854, following a fire which destroyed the original building. Make sure you purchase a guidebook before you enter, to help you get the most out of your visit to this beautiful theatre.

The lower rain levels during the month of January means that getting out and seeing Naples is much easier, and despite the cooler temperatures, there is nothing stopping you from enjoying the scenery and beauty in and around the city itself.
