Mons Claudianus

A trip to Marsa Alam will not be complete without a visit to Mons Claudianus. Prisoners of the Roman Empire used to mine the mountains for black quartz diorite that they used as building materials throughout the Roman Empire. Still visible in the area are remnants of the Roman Penal Colony established there, including their stable, workshops and apartments, and the steam baths. In fact, the hot springs are still there up to this day.
