Dates for the diary

A high point for many Marrakesh residents during October is the festival of Eid al-Fitr. This marks the end of the month long festival of Ramadan, during which faithful Muslims fast during the day. This three day festival is party time across the city and as it is a national holiday many services can be affected.

Many venues such as restaurants and hotels can operate with a reduced staff so make sure to check before you travel the revised opening times or range of services being offered.

Marrakesh is usually known for its early nights and early mornings, however this all changes during Eid al-Fitr as at night the city really comes to life! Music and street entertainment carry on late into the night and shops and cafes often open fairly late the next morning.

Typically falling in October, the important Eid ul-Adha or Festival of Sacrifice is the second most significant in the Muslim calendar. This festival celebrates Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his own son from God's decree.

Traditionally, locals will sacrifice an animal, a sheep or goat and the meat is given away to others to represent Ibrahim's actions. The date of this festival fluctuates as it is historically after the end of Ramadan and the completion of the pilgrimage to Mecca.

There are also cultural or secular festivals observed in October including the Tissa Horse Festival and Erfoud Date Festival. The Tissa Horse Festival is held in early October and showcases horse riding and skills.

This includes jumping, dressage and skills as horse riders. The Erfoud Date Festival is held in the beginning of October when the date crop is harvested. During this time, locals gather for a festival of dancing, music and food.
