What's the weather like in Lisbon in September
September sees the weather in Lisbon remain extremely warm.
The average temperature still reaches a high of 26°C (that's about 79°F), and never dips any lower than 17°C (about 63°F). You will see several days, at least four, with temperatures above 32°C. The daily average will never drop below 21°C. The lowest ever recorded temperature for September was 11°C and the highest ever recorded in the last 30 years was 37°C.
Sunrise for September is around 7:00 AM at the beginning of the month and slowly creeps up to 7:30 AM by the end of the month. You will see on average about nine hours of average daily sunshine along with 12 hours of daylight. It will be sunny 74% of the time. UV index number drops two points from August to six which is mid-range, so you still need to use lots of sunscreen with high SPF levels.
The average monthly rain is around 26mm. Thunderstorms start up again in September but still you will likely see only one or two days at most with thunder and lightning. You may get 1/10 inch of rain on each of three days during September with a total of 5-6 rainy days at most.
Average relative humidity tops out at 70% during the day. Night time averages reach down to 82% on average and evening relative humidity gets no higher than 51%. The dew point as with the rest of the year remains comfortable at 14°C.
Dominant wind direction as during the rest of the summer months is from the southwest. Average speed is around 9 mph with blowing sand or dust obstructing your views for 8 days on average monthly. Beaufort scale percentage drops to 25%. While surfing conditions are not as good as in July or August you can still ride some waves at local beaches such as Estoriland Cascais.
The average sea temperature is about 20°C (about 68°F).

The Areias Do Seixo is right by the beach on the Costa de Prata. It is a 5-star resort with a full service spa, luxurious rooms with fireplaces and fine in-house dining.
Hotel Albatroz and the Albatroz Palace
The Hotel Albatroz and the Albatroz Palace are both part of the Albatroz collection. Facing each other they were originally 19th century homes. In Cascais, they have great views overlooking the sea and excellent facilities. There are two pools and the Villa has a fantastic penthouse for rent.
Casa do Barao
In Chiado, one of many options is the Casa do Barao. Another property built in the 18th century, the some of the rooms have garden or street-side balconies. There is a continental breakfast served in their private garden every morning for guests.
Also near the Rossio Metro Station is the Mercy Hotel. A 5-star facility, the rooms are modern and tastefully decorated. The views from the hotel of Bairro Alto and Sao Jorge castle are spectacular.
Lx Boutique Hotel
Lx Boutique Hotel on Rua do Alecrim is located between Chiado and Baixa near the river. Trendy rooms with an attentive hotel staff, there is an integral sushi bar and restaurant with plenty of other bars and restaurants nearby.
Lisboa Prata Boutique Hotel
More 18th century architecture can be seen at the Lisboa Prata Boutique Hotel near Alfama in Bixa Pombalina. There is a bar, snack bar and a breakfast buffet.
The Art Inn
The Art Inn in Rossio has a wine bar in the lobby. Located inside Alfama, you are only about 15 minutes walking distance from Sao Jorge castle if you stay here.
Ribeira Tejo Boutique Guest House
A great hotel by the Tagus River is the Ribeira Tejo Boutique Guest House. Rooms are air conditioned with cable TV and private baths. Cais do Sodre subway station is close by.
Lisbon Beaches in September
Sesimbra beach is by the small village of Sesimbra. Very quaint, there is a 17th century fort close by. There is some spectacular scenery seemingly out of a storybook with views from the cliff tops overlooking the bay.
The city of Santa Cruz also along the north coast has several good beaches. Praia de Sta Helena and Praia de Azenha are two of the largest with white sand and unpolluted waters. The beaches around here are very popular during the summer and there is on average over 50,000 visitors each year.
Bars and Restaurants
Hennessys Irish Pub
Hennessys Irish Pub recently added a full service restaurant to the premises. A sports bar, there are widescreen TVs throughout the establishment. It is located by the river in downtown Lisbon.
Bar A Parodia
A cosy bar with an extensive drinks menu is the Bar A Parodia. The owner Filipa is famous for his hospitality. You will find it on the Rua Do Patorcinio.
Matiz Pombalina Bar
The Matiz Pombalina Bar on Rua das Trinas has fantastic cocktails with nice jazz selections playing in the background. It is known for its gin collection and has a great selection of premium vodkas too.
The Stone Café
The Stone Café on Rua Do Joao charges real bargain prices for a city like Lisbon for its food, snacks and drinks. A rock-and-roll bar, the owner is a Rolling Stones aficionado and he has an exhibition in the bar of his private collection of memorabilia.
A Tasca do Chico
For Fado music lovers try the A Tasca do Chico. For 20 years it has been one of the best places to listen to Fado in the city.
Things to do in Lisbon in September
Festival Regional de Gastronomia de Leiria
Food lovers will enjoy the Festival Regional de Gastronomia de Leiria which runs all month and is a celebration of Portugese cuisine.
Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
The Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival also takes place this month, and has grown massively in popularity since its inception in the mid 1990s.
Sintra Mountain Range
The Sintra Mountain Range is a small mountain range outside Lisbon that has been classified as a World Heritage site. The beauty of the region is legend and the area used to be reserved exclusively for Portuguese royalty prior to 1910.
Park and Palace of Monserrate
The 19th century Park and Palace of Monserrate is one of the top sites for visitors to view in Sintra. The gardens are stunning.
Quinta Da Regaleira
Another UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site is the Quinta Da Regaleira. This palace and extensive grounds has lakes, grottos, fountains and beautiful architecture to admire.
The Sintra Natural History Museum
Outside of Lisbon city in Sintra there are several museums worth visiting. The Sintra Natural History Museum has a great dinosaur exhibit for the children. The Sintra Museum of Modern Art has an eclectic collection of art and is also very child-friendly. Admission is free.
Campo de Golfe da Belavista
There are plenty of nice golf courses in the Lisbon area and the weather is perfect for the game this time of year. The Campo de Golfe da Belavista is a 9-hole course in the centre of Lisbon. The course is only 5 minutes from the airport. There is also a driving range.
