Just south of Limassol lies Button Beach. The beach is home to the Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas of the Cats, established in 327 c.e. Legend has it that cats were first brought to rid the area of snakes theory that must have worked, for now the snakes have vanished (along with most monks and nuns) but the cats are still plentiful.

Of local delicacies, there is halloumi, a goat or ewe cheese soaked in brine, which is best served grilled. There are also lountza, pork fillet, loukanika smoked sausage, and tiropites, which are cheeses wrapped in phyllo dough. 

Things to Do in Limassol in July

Kourion

Limassol is a great destination for chic travelers and history buffs alike. Limassol is a perfect place to perfect your bikini tan while imbibing on local archaeology. One of the best sites is Kourion (Curium), which was first settled in the Neolithic age and inhabited in various eras by Greeks and Romans. Here visitors will find the magnificent House of Eustolios, a private Roman village then turned into a Byzantine bath. Its main attraction are the fine mosaic floors, depicting Achilles and other Greek semi-mythical personages. Further along the edge of Kourion are the ruins of a 5th-century Byzantine basilica, a Roman fountain, and the mosaic-laden House of Gladiators.

Old Town

While you're in Limassol, check out the lively Old Town, topped but the 14th-century Limassol Castle. The small fortress was built by Crusaders and occupied by the Knights Templar for some time. The location is known for its sweet wine and sugar production, as well as the spot of King Richard the Lionheart's wedding to Berengaria of Navarre. The castle now serves as a medieval museum, with an extensive collection of armor, weapons, and tombstones. At Limassol's main square, travelers will find the Lanitis Art Foundation, with its rotating schedule of innovative exhibitions. Just around the corner is Limassol Cathedral and the palm tree-laden Grand Mosque.

Fasouri Watermania

The Fasouri Watermania is a thrilling waterpark with slides and kiddie pools galore. The Polynesian theme will add to the vacation element, and hopefully cool down you and your kids! Other on-site facilities include a massage parlor, shops, restaurants, and a temporary tattoo station. Or for a land version: try the Sayious Adventure Park, another fun place to bring the kidsith everything from off-road buggies, paint-balling, go-karting, archery and rock-climbing.
