The 21 02 Resto Lounge serves traditional Peruvian dishes including variations on ceviche and blackened chicken and there's a fitness centre.

Tierra Viva Miraflores Larco

Just a short stroll from the famous Miraflores boardwalk the Tierra Viva Miraflores Larco is a new 44-room hotel offering all the modern facilities you would expect in an understated, low-lit setting. Nearby there are some of the area's best restaurants, art galleries, gardens and craft fairs. The breakfast room adjoins a spacious terrace but for other meals it's best to venture out and hotel staff will recommend good restaurant choices within a short walk.

Atton San Isidro is in Lima's financial district, surrounded by the best restaurants, parks and shops. Highly rated among Lima's hotels, it is renowned for its high standards of service and relaxed atmosphere. There is a good restaurant on site serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, a 24-hour fitness centre and a stunning outdoor pool and sun terrace, jacuzzi, hot tub and sauna. Rooms are bright and airy, soundproofed and reasonably priced. Try a Pisco Sour from the Chabuca restaurant and bar or enjoy a meal combining the flavours of Peru, Chile and Italy.

Rafael

Rafael Osterling is a former lawyer who is now one of Latin America's top chefs and his Lima restaurant Rafael

has been showered with awards and praise. There is a tasting menu of 12 or more of his dishes to give you a full flavour of his skills, or you could opt for a more traditional two or three-course meal. The menu includes Peruvian specials such as tiradito, made with tuna flavoured with avocado and palm hearts, and duck.

Malabar

The highly-rated Malabar in San Isidro is where chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino gives guests a taste of the Amazon, from where he sources many of his ingredients. A mix of casual and formal dining, there will be something to suit all palates, including dishes such as smoked paiche, an Amazonian fish with black chilli sauce and grilled octopus with beans and parmesan. There's also a bar ranked in the world's top 10.

Estelar Miraflores Hotel

The Estelar Miraflores has an unassuming façade that hides a pleasant surprise the beautiful 21st floor Piso 21 restaurant and bar. From there, you can gaze out over the city whilst sipping a cocktail or glass of wine or enjoy lunch or dinner. It has attracted great reviews, not just for its views and food, but also for its friendly and relaxed service. This is a 'special occasion' destinations for Lima locals.

El Tio Mario

The El Tio Mario is where you come to simple and traditional Peruvian cuisine. Opened in 1987 by two entrepreneurs from Cusco, it started life as a food trolley and is still going strong at its two atmospheric Barranco premises more than three decades later. Try the Anticuchos, which are chicken, beef and cows' hearts kebabs, or causas, a Peruvian potato salad, among other classics.

Things to do in Lima in June

ChocoMuseo

Everyone loves chocolate, so indulge yourself and learn about the history of this sweet treat at the ChocoMuseo in Miraflores. You can eat it, but you can also make it and trace its origins as it became a global multi billion-pound industry. There are now two ChocoMuseos in Lima, one in Miraflores and one in Barranco. Both have museums and chocolate workshops, with activities for adults and kids.

Parque de la Imaginacion

Learn about science and technology past and present at the aptly-named Parque de la Imaginacion (Park of the Imagination) in Lima's San Miguel district. This is an interactive experience for young and old alike, with exhibits exploring such topics as electricity and mechanics, sound and light, the human body and the power of water and its importance to mankind.

Pachacamac

The huge archaeological site of Pachacamac is 40kms southeast of Lima and its oldest buildings date from 200AD. It was a thriving settlement of the Huari and Inca peoples for more than 1300 years, until the Spanish arrived. There are pyramids, palaces and temples, including the enormous Temple of the Sun and it is possible to get there and back on a day trip.

Divercity

Divercity is a city in miniature which is ideal all the family. The activities are primarily for children and there is restricted access for anyone, including parents, aged over 13. This allows the children aged 3-13 to role play more than 50 different professions and trades, from doctors to pilots and builders to firefighters. Located in Santiago de Surco.
