Things to do in August in Lanzarote

Make the most of the glorious summer sunshine and hit the beach. If you want to avoid the crowds, you're best off spending a few hours at one of Lanzarote's remote beaches, such as Playa de la Cantería in Orzola. This secluded white sandy beach gives way to turquoise, clean waters which are perfect for cooling off in during summer. Whilst the sea is perfectly safe for swimming most of the time, keep an eye out if you see any windsurfers – it means the waves are about to get a lot more aggressive! Due to the lack of popularity, this beach has no facilities, so you'll need to take your own food, drink and shade with you.

If the summer sunshine is too much for you, take a break and drive around Lanzarote in a hire car. Summer is one of the best times for an island tour, when a lack of clouds and almost certain sunshine make the glistening ocean and rugged volcanic landscape look even more beautiful than normal, so make sure you take your camera. Whilst you're out, make an effort to stop by the Mirador del Rio. This lookout point is set 475m above sea level in the north of the island and offers incredible panoramic views which stretch on for miles.

Another way to cool off from the summer heat is by visiting Jameos del Agua. This attraction is made up of an underground lagoon, filled with fascinating things to see, such as tiny albino crabs and unique volcanic rock formations. You can choose to visit the site as part of an excursion or on your own if you have a hire car. August is a great time to visit because most people are either by the pool or at the beach at this time of year, meaning you'll have plenty of room to explore the caves.

August is the last month of the year in Lanzarote when the surfing conditions are ideal, so take advantage and hit the waves. Lanzasurf is one of the best surfing schools on the island and offers all sorts of classes and lessons from fully-immersive surfing holidays with classes and accommodation to intensive surfing camps and one-day surf safaris. Whether you've never set foot on a surf board before or whether you're an experienced professional with years under your belt, you're sure to find the perfect course at Lanzasurf.

If you're into fishing, don't miss the chance to go sports fishing whilst on holiday in Lanzarote. August is one of the best times of the year for sports fishing when you can expect to catch everything from wahoo and barracuda to bonito and tuna. You can hire a boat and go off fishing yourself or team up with the professionals and go on a fishing excursion. Lanzarote Sports Fishing comes highly recommended and organises fishing excursions throughout the year on their own boat.
