February Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

What's the weather like in Lake Garda in February

Temperature

February is one of the coldest months at the beautiful holiday destination of Lake Garda in northern Italy with average temperatures of only 5ºC (41ºF) and average highs during the month reaching only a chilly 9ºC (48ºF). Thankfully, because of the warm water in the lake heating up the surrounding area, temperatures rarely fall below freezing and the average low for the month is 1ºC.

Rainfall

While it is warmer at the lake this month than January, it also tends to be slightly wetter with an average of 9 days of rain, and 43mm falling over the month. This, however, is still a drier time to visit than the summer when rainfall can reach 85mm over an average of 12 days.

Snow

If you're hoping for a winter wonderland of snow then you will need to keep your fingers crossed as there is only a 7% chance of snow at this time of year, although those visiting the mountains to the north will enjoy snowy conditions and the views from the northern section of the lake will be of snow-capped mountains.

Sunshine Hours

If, however, you're hoping for winter sunshine, this could be the month to visit with only a 19% chance of experiencing a cloudy day and a 28% chance of sun with an average of 7 sunshine hours in the day.

Wind

Those wanting to truly appreciate the stunning views around the lake will be thankful for the reduced chance of fog this month from the previous month, with only a 28% chance of encountering it. And, although cold at this time of year on the lake, the wind is gentle with only a 5% chance of a windy day.

The weather around the lake can vary depending on where you are. In the north, where the area is sheltered by the closely surrounding mountains, winter temperatures tend to be lower, whereas toward the south where the shoreline is more exposed is colder, therefore it is a good idea to keep an eye on the local forecast, whatever time of year you visit.

The line-up includes guest DJs and when you've worn yourself out on the dancefloor you can refuel with food in the Sinatra Restaurant. Although it is too cold in February to sit on the terrace, there is a glass-fronted dining room overlooking the lake so that you can watch the ferries come and go as you enjoy your food.

Things to do in Lake Garda in February

Castello Scaligero

The colder months like February are a great time of year to explore the many historic villas and castles the region has to offer before the tourists of spring and summer arrive. On the quiet eastern shores of the lake in Torri del Benaco is the Castello Scaligero, a beautiful 14th-century castle which contains a fascinating museum about the history of the local area.

Grotte di Catullo

Again, take advantage of the lack of tourists at this time of year to really explore some of Lake Garda's most mesmerising sites. The Grotte di Catullo is a vast, 3-storey, ruined Roman villa at the very northern tip of Sirmione and is considered one of the most important Roman sites in northern Italy. The site is called 'Grotte' (the Italian word for cave) because when it was first discovered covered in plants and undergrowth, that is what it was thought to be it was only when the area was cleared it was realised what it truly was. Legend has it that the villa was the home of Catullus the great Roman poet, although modern historians think this unlikely. Nevertheless the views here are stunning, as is the now ruined Roman architecture. Well worth exploring.

Boat Service Consorzio Motoscafisti

Explore the lake from Sirmione by motorboat with the Boat Service Consorzio Motoscafisti. Take a trip around the stunning lakeside, visit remote villages and stop off for some delicious Italian food at one of the splendid restaurants which line the lake's shore. With your own motorboat you can explore the lake in your own way in your own time.
