La gomera Weather January Averages, Spain
One of the smallest and least visited Canary Islands, La Gomera is a sun-drenched, natural paradise in the Atlantic Ocean. With pristine beaches, mountains, lush rainforests and wonderful weather this island is a dream holiday destination for travelers who want to get off the beaten path. Although easily accessible by ferry from the larger nearby islands, La Gomera does not see the volume of tourists that the other Canary Islands do, making it a good choice for the more discerning tourist.

January may be one of the coolest months in La Gomera but it is still warm and lovely for a winter holiday. The average temperature during January is 18°C, although high temperatures can reach a balmy 21°C on warmer days. Low temperatures rarely ever drop below 14°C, meaning it never feels too cold in La Gomera, even at night.
Fortunately, the island of La Gomera enjoys nine hours of sunshine every day and a 52% chance of a sunny day throughout January, so there's plenty of time for sunbathing, whether on the beach or by the pool.
Though experiencing less rainfall than November, January is the second wettest month of the year in La Gomera. The island sees around 160mm of precipitation and there's around 17 wet days out of 31. There's still only an 11% chance of rain though, so visitors should be able to enjoy plenty of dry weather in January.
Despite a small chance of rainfall, the weather in La Gomera in January attracts tourists looking to escape the cold winter conditions in other parts of Europe. The beautiful Mediterranean climate is still present in January, making the island a perfect winter getaway.
La Gomera Hotels In January
Regarded as one of the best value hotels on the island, the Hotel Anaterve in Vallehermoso, on the northern half of the island, offers a comfortable and affordable stay in La Gomera. Located on a mountainside this hotel can be a bit of a hike, but if you're looking for accommodation that is off the beaten path it's perfect. The views from this hilltop hotel, along with their outstanding and friendly service, make the climb worth it.
Hotel Jardín Tecina
In the warmer south of the island, Hotel Jardín Tecina is a great choice for every traveler. The clifftop hotel offers sea views from some rooms, where lucky guests can sometimes spot dolphins in the water. Visitors can make use of the hotel's five pools, the à la carte restaurant and a selection of bars. The village of Playa de Santiago is just 10 minutes away.
La Gomera Beaches For January
The surrounding Atlantic Ocean remains temperate in January at an average sea temperature of 20°C. While this is comfortable enough for swimming, you may prefer to swim in the hotel pool rather than the ocean, especially if your hotel has a heated one.
With a rugged 90km coastline, visitors to la Gomera will be spoiled for choice when it comes to hitting the beach. The beaches here are unlike many of the touristy ones of the Canary Islands. Instead, travellers will find secluded bays, and quiet, pristine beaches some that can only be reached on foot.
Playa de Vallehermoso
One such beach is Playa de Vallehermoso. This beautiful black sand beach is located right in the north of the island and is surrounded by cliffs on both sides. As a result, the choppy ocean means that only experienced swimmers should swim off the shores of this beach, but for others there's a swimming complex with seawater pools, changing rooms and showers nearby.
Bars And Restaurants
For a small island, La Gomera has a surprisingly large choice of dining options for holiday makers to enjoy. One of the best-rated restaurants on the island is Junonia in Playa de Santiago. The contemporary restaurant serves everything from local fish dishes to pasta and traditional Canarian specialties. Guests can eat al fresco overlooking the harbour and enjoy the mild January weather.
Restaurante La Salsa
Located in Valle Gran Rey, Restaurante La Salsa aims to please every diner that walks through the door. Alongside the usual menu of fresh local cuisine, the restaurant offers a varied meat-free menu for vegetarian diners as well as some delicious vegan options. La Salsa is popular with both islanders and tourists but is quite small inside, so booking here is recommended.
While La Gomera doesn't have the same lively nightlife of some of the other Canary Islands, there are some great bars where holiday makers can spend an enjoyable evening. In the town of San Sebastian many bars line the promenade which leads from the harbour to the Plaza de las Americas. Head here for a fun evening!
Things To Do In La Gomera In January
One of the most popular activities in La Gomera is walking and hiking. The stunning, unspoiled scenery and rugged mountains make for a great backdrop and the island is well equipped with a networks of trails and paths to suit every level of ability.
