What's The Weather Like In Krakow In January

Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, dating back to the seventh century, and is the second largest city in the country. It has long been a leading center of academic, cultural and artistic life in Poland and is an important economic hub. The city has a climate similar to that of the UKold in winter and mild in summer.

Temperature

January is a cold month with a very chilly average temperature of -3°C (about 28°F), dropping from the average temperature of -1°C in December. The average high reaches just to freezing, at about 0°C (around 32°F). The lows drop to a bone-chilling -5°C (about 23°F). When visiting during this month, you'll want to be sure to bring a heavy coat or parka, gloves, hat and scarves to keep your exposed skin protected from the low temperatures.

Things to Do In Krakow In January

World Cup Ski Jumping

The weather may not be typical holiday weather but the Polish know how to make the most of it, hosting a portion of the World Cup Ski Jumping championships in January and again in March. The acclaimed ski-jumping tournament takes place in Zakopane, which is located near Krakow, in late January. In March, the tourney comes back to Poland, but this time to the town of Wisla.

Juliusz Slowacki Theatre

When the weather is too frightful, head indoors to the Juliusz Slowacki Theatre, which is the biggest theatre in the city of Krakow. It dates back to 1893 and its palatial appearance was inspired by some of Europe's best opera houses and theatres. The theater hosts performances on two different stages all year round. Performances include musicals, dramas, operas and symphonies.

Church of the Virgin Mary

You'll also want to see one of Poland's most famous churches, the Church of the Virgin Mary, also called Kosciol Mariacki. The Gothic architecture and the church's two towers, one with a gold-plated crown, are must-sees for anyone who appreciates history and art. Inside, you'll find one of the most elaborate altars in all of Europe and every hour a trumpet plays the traditional tune of war. There is a small admission fee to get into the church and also to take photos.
