What's the weather like in Kotor in February

Temperature

The last month of winter is about the same as its predecessor, January. The average temperature goes up to 7°C, with a reasonably high humidity at 75%. The warmer days reach 13°C, and the nights are still cold and crisp at 2°C. Wind speeds reach about 57kmh, most of them still northern continental influences clashing with coastal gusts sneaking into the bay from the Adriatic Sea.

Sunshine Hours

They days are still short, with up to 4 hours of sunshine, and chances of bright skies are still predominantly low at 30% on average.

Rainfall

Chances of rain maintain their 60% threshold, with rainfall volume not exceeding a slightly increased 109mm, spread over the course of 9 days in the month. This roughly translates into yet another month consisting mostly of cool and rainy days, cloud blankets and the occasional ray of sunshine peeking into the Bay of Kotor every other afternoon. The geographical mixture of both low and high terrain make way for a mixed marine and dry land climate, featuring both coastal winds and chills enveloping the mountainous peaks, which are often dipped in thin layers of snow.

Sea Temperature

The sea is still quite cold at an average temperature of 13°C (55°F), and thus not recommended for any kind of swimming. Even when sailing, a serious coat and hat are recommended, as the bay is often subject to capricious wind shifts throughout the day. The barometric pressure is comfortably low, and the dew point is nowhere near an oppressive margin, allowing for the nights to be simply cool you won't be relying on air conditioning, but heating is a must in any home at this point. There may be occasional snowfall recorded every other year, but given the higher daytime temperature, it never lasts for longer than half a day before melting away.

Kotor Hotels in February

Situated less than a mile from Kotor, in the beautiful neighbouring commune of Dobrota, Apartmani Kovacevic gets quite busy during February, particularly around Valentine's, as many couples choose to spend a romantic weekend getaway in this secluded resort of the Adriatic Sea. These self-catering apartments all feature a comfortable lounge area with a flat screen TV, fully equipped kitchen, en-suite bathroom with toiletries and a balcony opening out to stunning views of the bay and its towering cliffs. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance from this beautiful apartment complex, and a long shoreline promenade leads you straight into the Old Town, a haven of historical landmarks and quirky boutiques.

For the perfect Valentine's Day escapade, we do recommend the splendid Hotel Monte Cristo, which occupies a 13th century building that was once owned by Kotor's first bishop. Its stylishly decorated double and superior suites feature fine-finished wood furnishings and beautifully restored architectural features which stay loyal to the original design of the building. The rooms included access to a private bathroom, balcony offering panoramic views of the bar, and a scrumptious breakfast buffet served at the hotel's restaurant, which occupies a dining room and a terrace incorporated into a sumptuous courtyard with flowery accents. A shuttle service is provided for easy and quick access to Tivat Airport, and the hotel is within walking distance from Kotor's buzzing marina and nightlife.

Another superb option for a romantic weekend is Palazzo Drusko Deluxe Rooms, which occupies a 600-year-old house once owned by noble families of Montenegro. Its sumptuous suites feature plush lounge areas, with traditional décor and antique furniture from the 19th century, as well as a private bathroom and flat screen TV. The complex offers a shared kitchen for its guests to use freely, and it's within walking distance of the beautiful and fascinating St. Tryphon's Cathedral. Plenty of restaurants and shops line the streets around the hotel, and the beach is only 350 yards away. Most importantly, the venue is located in the very heart of Kotor's Old Town, offering not only direct access to its many UNESCO Heritage landmarks, but also incredible views of the architecture and the stunning natural beauty surrounding it.

Kotor beaches for February

The Kotor Riviera is the deepest part of the Boka Kotorska Bay, and it doesn't have any long and sandy beaches to offer, which is a common feature of the Montenegro coastline. Despite that, what gives the area its absolute charm are the many pontoons reaching out into the bay from pebbled beaches, stretching over dark blue waters and offering unique and unforgettable sights of the limestone cliffs and their forests. Most of these pontoons are part of private properties, most of them hotels and apartment residences, so chances are that you may benefit from free access to some of them by booking yourself into one of their suites.

Bars and Restaurants

Of the many excellent dining options of Kotor and its neighbouring towns, the Stari Mlini is certainly a local hot spot. Its history is similar to other farms in the area, which became restaurants at the turn of the century, keeping their water-mills as romantic backdrops for fine dining experiences. The Stari chefs never get tired of dazzling their guests with new menus, without overlooking the values of traditional Montenegrin cuisine. The dishes are mostly based on fish, sourced locally and responsibly, always fresh and accompanied by delicious vegetable dishes, as well as fresh seafood. Luscious greenery compliments the wood and stone décor of the old mill, along with small and narrow bridges that cross the shimmering streams of water a hearty meal with a glass of wine while admiring all of this is pretty much as close to heaven as you could possibly get in these parts of the Adriatic Sea.

The Pod Volat is worth the drive to Podgorica, not many miles away from Kotor. Its meat specialities are known far and wide, and the menu is rich in traditional dishes including goulash and grilled delights. A highlight worth mentioning is the cevapcici, a south-eastern meal consisting of minced meat, grilled with sausages. The traditional décor and waiter uniforms add an extra level of charm to this place, making it well-deserving of its acquired title of "national restaurant". It simply cannot be missed!

Bandiera is the bar to go to if you're looking for a completely different kind of night, drenched in heavy and classic rock music. There is a fully stocked bar with beers, lagers and hefty spirits, while the staff are very casual and friendly. The venue is found on the darker side of town, where fewer tourists venture, so you'll definitely get a whiff of the local spirit if you spend an evening here. The music rocks and the atmosphere is just unforgettable, especially on weekend nights when the younger generation comes out.

Things to do in Kotor in February

February is a good time to visit the Old Town and its numerous architectural masterpieces dating back centuries, from both medieval and Venetian occupation times. One the absolute must-see places in Kotor is the Maritime Museum of Montenegro, which is home to an impressive collection put together by the Boka Marine fraternity, offering fascinating highlights of the country's rich history revolving around domestic shipping and international maritime trade. Some of the collection's elements also shed light on the country's quest to establish new trading routes while simultaneously strengthening defences against pirates that once roamed the Adriatic Sea, terrorizing the coastline. The best part of this museum is that it's housed within a superb Baroque palace, once the residence of the noble Grgurina family.

You can also make your way down to the neighbouring town of Tivat you can either jump on a local bus or rent a car to enjoy the scenery as you head out. It's a small town, but it has recently grown into a very classy and even high-end tourist destination for many Europeans, offering luxurious retreats and venues to enjoy leisurely. There is a beautiful promenade along the Bay of Kotor, buzzing with restaurants, fashion boutiques, cafes and bakeries that are simply a pleasure to peruse. You can easily spend the whole day in Tivat and not get bored, as it offers plenty of things to do and see. Just don't forget your cameras the views of the bay and its mountains are absolutely breath-taking.
