June is one of the wettest months of the year in Khao Lak, Thailand, when the resort experiences similar weather to that of Bangkok. With an average of 21 rainy days and 238mm of rain during the month, it's worth packing some waterproof clothing. The skies above Khao Lak tend to stay partly cloudy, with the most rain to be expected earlier in the month. If you encounter rain it should pass quickly, so do not worry about it ruining your trip.

During the day, temperatures can reach up to a sizzling 33°C, so make sure you bring plenty of suntan lotion. The evenings cool down slightly to 25°C, ideal for enjoying a moonlight stroll on the beach but you still won't need a jacket!

The length of the day stays essentially constant. The shortest day is June 2 with 12:49 hours and the longest is June 18 with 12:52 hours. The sun rises at around 5:55am and sets around 6:45pm. There are only 5 hours of sunshine in this month, the same as September, but this is still plenty to enjoy the resort, especially considering the sea remains 29°C and perfect for swimming.

Pakarang Cape is the most westerly point on the mainland, and at low tide a great place to hunt for shells, coral and smooth pebbles. The beach is popular with surfers.

Khuk Khak Beach is wide and long, with a few lagoons and rivers here and there. It's a quiet beach with just a handful of restaurants, supermarkets and massage huts. Another great spot is South Beach, with its shady casuarina trees and tropical flora. It's a quiet beach spot with massage huts here and there. Here you'll find only a handful of hotels: Merlin, Emerald, Diamond and The Briza Hotel.

A Thai/Western fusion favourite is Dao Thong (Opposite Bang Niang Market), serving dinner only, and mostly traditional dishes with the occasional attractive international flair. La Roma (Opposite the market) is an Italian pizza trattoria that stylishly mixes Thai with pizza. Another fusion experiment is Victoria Tandoori Night (Opposite Mukhdara Resort, Soi Bang Niang #1), specialising in Thai and Indian set menus with a takeaway option.

Try 9 Restaurant & Bar (Central La On), which serves three meals a day in a quiet and classy atmosphere. Or the wildly popular Muan Lai (Highway 4 between Khao Lak Beach and La On Village), a bright, yellow restaurant specialising in northeastern Thai cuisinerilled meats adorned in sticky rice and spicy sauces.

A trip to Khao Lak isn't complete without a visit to the Khao Lak National Park, with its impressive collection of sea cliffs, mangrove forests, tall hills, estuaries, valleys and beaches. The area is absolutely thriving with wildlife, with drongos, gibbons, hornbills, tapirs, monkeys and black bears. The visitor centre features a restaurant, providing the perfect place to enjoy a spot of lunch.

With a selection of courses available, golfers will be in their element in Khao Lak. Tublamu Royal Navy Golf Course is one of the most popular 18-hole courses and is located a few kilometres south of the resort. It is set in one of the region's most beautiful bays, with impressive costal scenery on one side and picturesque forest landscapes on the other.

Between Bang Sak and Khao Lak you'll find a series of beach trails which are great to discover on foot or by motorbike. Some of the trails lead to secluded beaches which are ideal for taking it easy and relaxing in peace.

Hikers will be happy to find out that there are many walking opportunities throughout Khao Lak. Guided hikes along the coast can be arranged through agencies when you arrive at the resort, or if you'd prefer something more relaxing, how about a boat trip along the Khlong Thap Liang estuary?
