July Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

What's the weather like in Kefalonia in July?

Temperature

July sees the beach lovers arrive in force on the Ionian island of Kefalonia, taking advantage of the balmy mid-summer weather. Along with August it is the warmest time of year here and perfect for sun-worshippers. Things really start to heat up with average temperatures of 26°C, peaking at a sweltering 29°C. Light clothing such as t-shirts, shorts and sandals are ideal for both day time and evening wear. Night-time temperatures average at a warm 18°C, so no jackets required if you're heading out for a romantic evening stroll.

Temperatures on this Greek island have reached a blistering record daytime high of 40°C in July, so choosing air-conditioned accommodation will make your holiday more comfortable. The lowest July temperature on record is 15°C, but temperatures tend to stay steady through the month

Wind

Although temperatures are very warm and the weather can be humid, the island is cooled by the meltemi winds coming from the Aegean Sea. These are usually most noticeable in the afternoon and evenings, but spells can sometimes last several days. In July, the average wind speeds are likely to be between calm to moderate breezes and there is little cloud cover.

Rainfall

July is part of the dry season on this Greek island. In fact there is generally no rainfall whatsoever during the month, which is a major selling point for holidaying here this time of year. The number of sunshine hours hits its peak for the year at a dazzling fourteen hours a day. The sea temperature rises 2°C to an average of 25°C and it is set to get even warmer next month, so this is the perfect time to get down to the beach and try some water sports.

Sunstroke

If you are planning on doing lots of sunbathing, make sure you wear sunscreen with a high SPF, as sunburn can ruin a holiday (not to mention a tan). Sunstroke is also a big risk, so try to avoid being in the sun during the hottest parts of the day. You can find out when this is by checking the local weather forecast. If you are out and about checking out the local sites and make sure you carry water with you in order to keep hydrated. Hats and sunglasses are also a good idea.

Hotels in Kefalonia in July

Studios Erietta

With easy access to the airport and local transport, plus onsite parking, Studios Erietta offers a convenient complex of studio apartments half a mile from Ammes beach. Enjoy a holiday among the peaceful surroundings of the magnificent Enos Mountain and a short hop from the crystal blue waters of the Ionian Sea.

You will also be well positioned to explore the sights of the island, as you're just four miles from the popular tourist resort of Lassi and five miles from the island's capital, Argostoli. Hospitality is valued here, so you can expect a warm welcome from your hosts. Each modern air conditioned studio has a TV and safe, and kitchen area equipped with a cooker and kettle. There's a mini market just a short walk away. The complex boasts two bars, so why not sit back and sip a cocktail or go for a dip in the swimming pool before soaking up the rays on the sun loungers.

Beaches in Kefalonia in July

Xi Beach

Xi Beach in the south west of Kefalonia is another good option for water sports, with companies offering wakeboarding, water skiing and surfing. Easily accessible by car or public bus from Lixouri and Argostoli, the beach has shallow waters, making it ideal for families with young children. The beach's name comes from the X-shaped cove it sits in. The sand here is an unusual reddish brown colour, as a result of the local clay. Visitors wanting to try a natural mud spa can enjoy its reputed cleansing and tightening effect on the skin. Amenities include straw umbrellas, sunbeds and a bar serving cool refreshments.

Mytros

The famously beautiful Mytros beach is located to the north of Argostoli and boasts white sands and crystal blue waves. The most photographed beach on Kefalonia, it was featured in the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Nestled into dramatic rocky cliffs, you'll find a few sun beds and a snack bar, but otherwise it is unspoilt. However, visitors should be aware that the sea here gets deep very quickly and the waves can be rough, so it's more suitable for strong swimmers.

Bars and Restaurants

Andromeda

Andromeda restaurant in Lourdas offers exquisitely prepared cuisine made from top quality ingredients and personally presented at your table. With a romantic yet relaxed ambiance, you will be welcomed with a smile to this Greek tavern by the staff, and can be assured of excellent service. With all this in mind, you may be surprised at the reasonable prices.

Elli's

Elli's is a quaint romantic restaurant on the marina at Fiskardo. Situated alongside a small pebbled beach, you will be swept away by its charming location, with views of the lapping waves and over the sailboats towards Ithaca. Serving a top menu of Greek cuisine, you are sure to be tempted by its grilled steak, meatballs with vegetables, roasted squid and ratatouille, not to mention the desserts.

Things to do in Kefalonia

Argostoli

Kefalonia's capital city of Argostoli is located in a bay surrounded by mountains and lush green forests. Sadly most of its beautiful Venetian buildings were destroyed in a major earthquake in 1953. However taking a walk around this cosmopolitan town is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon and there are a number of attractions. The stone Drapano Bridge has a small pyramid in its centre, while an attractive coastal promenade leads to a fishing boat and small ferry quay. Head to Vallianos Square for restaurants, cafes and bars, or wander down the cobbled Lithostroto Street for shopping. Notable buildings include the beautiful Saint Spyridon church and the clock tower in Campana Square.

Water Sports

While the weather's warm and dry, adventurous types will want to head to the beach and try out some water sports. Makris Gialos Greek for 'long beach' is the best place on the island. This thin stretch of golden sand is lapped by clear waters and there's a wide range of water sports available. Try the long-established Albatros Watersports centre, located next to Stavento Bar, to rent jet skis, banana boats and pedalos. Water skiing lessons are also available so you can hone your skills.
