Credo Mutwa Cultural Village

Credo Mutwa is a fascinating individual, a Zulu shaman born in 1921.  He is an author, prophet, philanthropist, and sculptor.  Some say that his older sculptures prophesize the discovery of AIDS, the attacks of 9/11, and the overthrow of Thabo Mbeki.  You'll just have to visit this park yourself to come up with your own conclusions.  Mr. Mutwa created this large park in Soweto to share traditional African life and beliefs.   Regardless of your thoughts on prophesizing, this is still a very educational and interesting insight into African folklore and ways of life.  The outdoor museum is free to the public and is open from 6AM to 6PM daily.

Gauteng Lion & Safari Park

You don't necessarily have to go on safari to see elephants, lions, leopards, and rhinos, though safaris are certainly an option at the Lion & Safari Park.  This massive reserve is approximately 45 minutes from Johannesburg.  Admission to the park is free, and you'll only have to pay for the activities that you choose to participate in.  These could be as short as giraffe feeding or cub interactions to as long as a full-day or nighttime safari with a guide.  Learn about the lives of these animals and efforts to conserve their habitat.  The park is open daily at 8AM and closes at 8PM on weekends and 6PM weekdays.

Lesedi Cultural Village

For a more interactive experience in South African tribal culture, visit the Lesedi Cultural Village 45 minutes north of Johannesburg.  This large outdoor, living museum highlights the rich cultural heritage of five different tribes.  See how they live, eat what they eat, and watch them participate in traditional drumming, singing, and dancing.  A number of different shops and mini-museums are available for your browsing.  You can walk through their villages, talk with the hosts, and watch local wildlife.  There are also some lodging options available if you'd like to stay here for even more immersion.
