Temperature

With its Mediterranean climate, Jerusalem remains mostly comfortable throughout much of winter. In December, the average daily temperature is a cool 10°C (50°F). There isn't much variance throughout the day. The daily high typically reaches just 14°C (57°F), while the low drops a bit to 6°C (43°F). Large temperature swings are possible though; the highest recorded temperature in Jerusalem in December is 29°C (83°F), while the lowest on record is -1°C (30°F).

Rainfall

December becomes a bit more rainy as the wettest months of January and February approach. With a total of approximately 60 mm of rain (more than 2 inches), spread across an average of 11 rainy days throughout the month, tourists in Jerusalem at this time may want to pack an umbrella.

Though not the shortest days of the year, December does have less sunlight than most months in Jerusalem. With rainy days and the winter solstice approaching, December days typically receive 8 hours of sunshine. As Jerusalem lights up with holiday decor though, many travelers may not mind the shorter days.

Jacko's Street

Located in the Mahane Yehuda Market, Jacko's Street serves popular Israeli food in the heart of Jerusalem. Favorite dishes include the chicken liver with pears and the beef fillet with mushroom risotto. A custom cocktail list makes this a nice stop at the end of a long day of touring.

Hamotzi

A Jerusalem native heads up Hamotzi restaurant, with North African cuisine mostly inspired by Algeria. Combining these cuisines results in delicious dishes like the mixed grillith chicken, short ribs, spleen and veal; or the bouletteslgerian meatballs served with cabbage. Recently relocated to a large building on Jaffa Road, the restaurant is located in an ancient building and showcases ethnic designs including a large mural that reflects the head chef's life and roots.

Red Heifer Steakhouse

Perfect for a break from traditional Israeli cuisine, the Red Heifer Steakhouse is an American grill serving classics like steaks, pizzas and pastas. The streakhouse has a prime location on King David Street. Near the Mamilla Mall and Old City, there are two dining rooms and a large veranda. Popular dishes include the Red Heifer Burger and the classic rib eye steak.

Abu Shukri

The main attraction at Abu Shukri may be its address; located on Via Delarosa, it is in a prime location inside of the Old City, with countless historic and religious sites within easy walking distance. Abu Shukri serves hummus and falafel plates in a small, historic building and is a popular stop for hungry tourists and locals alike.

Things to do in Jerusalem in December

Hanukkah

Hanukkah is one of the largest Jewish holidays and is spectacularly celebrated in Jerusalem. Menorahs and other festive lights will be on display throughout the city during this eight-day holiday. Bakeries serve sufganiots (donuts) and latkes as traditional celebratory foods. Children's workshops, plays and live music, and an annual relay race are all part of the festivities going on in the Holy Land at this time of the year.

The Dome of the Rock

Travelers interested in Jerusalem's Islamic history and significance will enjoy a visit to The Dome of the Rock (Qubbat al-Sakhra). The first domed shrine to be built, this 7th-century destination is said to house the rock from which the prophet Muhammad ascended into heaven. The location also has Christian and Jewish significance as it is believed to be the site where Abraham offered his son Isaac as a sacrifice. Beautiful Persian tiles and a golden dome adorn the exterior while elaborate mosaics line the interior; however, only Muslims are allowed to go inside of the dome.

Hamshushalayim

Between Hanukkah, Christmas, and HamshushalayimDecember is one of the most fun times of the year to visit Jerusalem. The mild winter allows travelers to enjoy their time exploring the city and celebrating at festivals like Hamshushalayim. This winter festival is spread over four weekends in December and includes street theater shows, night tours, musical performances, and special menus at various restaurants. Many museums and galleries will open for free on the Thursdays before each weekend during this time as well.

Tel Aviv

Just an hour drive west of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv is the financial and technological center for Israel. Home to Tel Aviv University, the largest university in Israel, the city is known for its active nightlife and 24-hour culture. Combining a vibrant beach life on the Mediterranean with historical architecture and UNESCO sites all over the city, this unique destination makes for a great day trip from Jerusalem.

The Museum of Italian Jewish Art

Located in the heart of Jerusalem, in the Nahalat Shiv'a district, the Museum of Italian Jewish Art offers a look at Italian Jewish traditions, customs, and history. Displaying precious ritual objects from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as modern works of art, the museum is a great indoor destination on rainy or cold days in December. A beautiful synagogue was transported to the museum from Italy and is one of the prime sites at the museum. A variety of events are held here, including concerts and workshops for adults and children.
