What's the Weather like in Grand Cayman in August

Temperature

Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman Islands, features the highest annual temperatures in August. According to statistics, August 5 is the hottest day of the year, with average temperatures ranging from 27C (80.6F) to 32C (89.6F). The rest of the month features similar temperatures. Daily lows may drop to 25C (77F), sometimes even lower, and rise up to 28C (82.4F), seldom higher. Daily high temperatures tend to vary between 30C (86F) and 33C (91.4F), occasionally more. In this regard, Puerto Rico, for example, has more pleasant temperatures this time of year.

If you come to Grand Cayman Island in August, prepare to have hot weather from around 9 am until 8 pm throughout the month.

Extraordinary weather occurrences

Starting from August, the possibility of a hurricane hitting the Cayman Islands increases significantly. However, last hurricane that inflicted major damage to this particular island occurred in 2004. According to statistics, a tropical storm (with speed between 39 mph/62 kph and 74 mph/119 kph) or a hurricane (over 74 mph/119 kph) is likely to hit the Cayman Islands roughly once in 20 months.

Earthquakes and tsunamis are other natural occurrences to keep in mind. The last major earthquake, which failed to cause significant damage, took place in 2004.

Like earthquakes, tsunamis, which are their direct results, happen rarely. High and strong waves are their main feature. If you notice that the water by the coast recedes, put as much distance between you and the coastline as quickly as possible. Also, take some vantage point in the vicinity, if available. If you are in a boat, it is often wiser to head to the open sea, where waves are much smaller.

August is the low season in the Grand Cayman resort, with accommodation rates significantly lower than a few months before. So, if you wish to enjoy an upscale experience for less money, this is the right time to come to the island.

Regal Beach Club, located on Seven Miles Beach in George Town, is a 3-star property. The complex features swimming pools, Jacuzzi and tennis courts. Accommodation units dispose of kitchens equipped with coffee makers, and with bathrooms with free toiletries. Flat-screen TVs and free internet access are additional amenities. The airport is a few kilometers/miles away.

Shangri-La Boutique Bed & Breakfast

Shangri-La Boutique Bed & Breakfast is a 4-star complex, located in the West Bay district. Guests of the resort benefit of an outdoor swimming pool, free bicycles and a hot tub. Free Wi-Fi is a complimentary amenity. Rooms have flat-screen TVs and fridges, while some rooms add a kitchen with dishwasher. Free parking is also available. The airport is some 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) away.

Beaches for August for Grand Cayman

The island of Grand Cayman has many beautiful beaches around the island. They are suitable for various activities. For example, if you prefer having a cocktail in a beach bar while watching amazing sunset, head to the western coast. But, if you feel yourself closer to nature, head to any other side of the island.

Frank Sound Beach

Frank Sound Beach is a secluded beach, located in the southeastern part of the island, near the intersection of Bodden Town and Frank Sound roads. Since there is little urbanization, the chances of crowding are very low. Frank Sound Beach features palm trees and mangroves, and is an ideal spot for a complete relaxation. Restrooms, however, aren't available, which might be the only downside of this attractive beach. 

North Side Beach

North Side Beach is another great beach, the one you can find in the North Side section of the Grand Cayman coastline. It is a long, sandy beach that many people find inviting for exploring on foot. More so, its waters are shallow, in general, which is especially convenient for families. Plus, the beach is tranquil since the surrounding area, aside from beachfront accommodations, isn't urbanized. Note that North Side Beach lacks public restrooms.

Public Beach

Public Beach is a section of a more famous Seven Miles Beach, located on the west coast of the island. The beach is within a close proximity from Governors Creek, and there are various popular restaurants and bars around. The water is usually calm and the beach is shallow. Entertaining opportunities for all ages are available on Public Beach. 

Restaurants and Bars for Grand Cayman in August

George Town is a culinary capital of Grand Cayman Island, with many well-reputed restaurants and bars available. But, don't hesitate to put some distance between you and the island's capital because great dining isn't the exclusive right of George Town.

Chicken Chicken

Chicken Chicken is a restaurant with affordable prices. As its name implies, the house specializes in chicken meat, but homemade soups, fresh salads and vegetables are also part of the menu. The specialty of the house is Caribbean Wood Roasted chicken, so make sure to check out this dish. Chicken Chicken is open on a daily basis from 10 am to 10 pm.

Casa 43 Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Bar

Casa 43 Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Bar is a dining venue next to Seven Miles Beach. The eatery excels in the preparation of fresh meals, and tacos and the guacamole are some specialties of the house. Casa 43 is a mid-range restaurant, and its opening hours are from 11 am (5 pm on Sunday) to 11 pm.

Thai Orchid

Thai Orchid serves authentic Thai food, with the addition of some Japanese specialties. Some Thai dishes you should have here are Tom Yum Goong soup, Panang Curry and Ped Phad Khing (crispy duck without bones). An extensive sushi menu should delight any gourmand appreciating the Japanese cuisine. Thai Orchid has options for vegetarians, too. Opening hours of the restaurant are daily from 11:30 am to 10 pm. 

Vivine's Kitchen

Vivine's Kitchen is an affordable restaurant, located in the southeastern corner of East End. The restaurant assumes an attractive spot, surrounded by lush greenery, with sea views. It serves Caymanian specialties, including lobsters, conches and fresh fish. In general, Vivine's Kitchen is open from 11 am to 8 pm. If you head this way, note that Monday tends to be a day off.

Things to Do in Grand Cayman in August

For such a small island, the resort of Grand Cayman offers surprisingly many things to do, both in the sea and ashore. And these are some especially interesting ones:

Devil's Grotto

Devil's Grotto is an excellent place for snorkeling, featuring a network of caves. Don't forget to bring light and camera since you may take photos of the lifetime while examining corals, sponges and sea life. For the premium experience, head there in the morning before guided tours start bringing many people.

Camana Bay Observational Tower

A visit to the Camana Bay Observational Tower reveals beautiful views of Seven Mile Beach, the North Sound and George Town. While climbing the tower, you will examine scenes of the underwater world the island of Grand Cayman is famous for. In fact, the mosaic that runs along the staircase replicates the dive from the bottom of the sea to the water surface.

Mission House
