What's the Weather like in Funchal in June
June is the beginning of the summer season in Funchal, Madeira, with temperatures climbing higher than the previous months and barely any rain. It's the perfect time to visit to explore all that Funchal has to offer before the summer holidays officially begin and the crowds come pouring in.
Daily average temperatures are a very pleasant 21°C at this time of year, though the mercury often rises to 23°C and higher in the afternoons. At night the temperatures barely drop at all, with average low temperatures remaining a very mild 18°C throughout June. Packing layers is a good idea if you're visiting in June. During the day, t-shirts, shorts and swimwear will suffice, but you might want to slip a thin jumper or two into your suitcase for when the sun goes down and the temperatures drop a little. Don't forget your suncream, either, as the sun is very strong at this time of year.
June is officially the dry season in Funchal, with hardly any rainfall throughout the month you can expect around 10mm to fall over an average of 5 days. It's unlikely you'll see any showers on your trip and, if you do, they will pass quickly, but it might be worth packing a small umbrella anyway so you don't get caught out.
Thanks to its positioning so close to North Africa and the equator, Funchal sees barely any movement in the amount of sunshine hours throughout the year. In June there is only around 5 hours of sunshine per day which may not seem like a lot, but there is still plenty of time for you to explore all the cultural attractions in the town as well as spend some time relaxing on the beaches.

Funchal Beaches for June
Funchal's shoreline is characterised either by black sands that stem from the island's volcanic landscape or pebbles and rock formations. The beaches are one of the main reasons tourists flock to Funchal every summer, as the beaches are small and secluded and the waters are beautifully clear and welcoming. Whether you want to kick back and relax, soaking up the peace and quiet with a book, or hit the sea and splash around in the shallows, there's a beach for you.
Doca do Cavacas
Much of the waterfront in Madeira is made up of quirky pool complexes, and the Doca do Cavacas is a great example. It's a small complex near the centre of Funchal and boasts a series of natural volcanic pools as well as access to the sea via stone steps. If the sea isn't for you, try one of the swimming pools. In addition, there are changing rooms and a selection of restaurants and bars surrounding the site.

The Dona Amelia Restaurant is a cosy, colourful restaurant in the heart of Funchal. Its décor is traditionally Portuguese with pastel-coloured columns and plenty of greenery, plus there is an outdoor terrace that offers great views over the surrounding landscape. The menu provides an ample insight into deliciously fresh Mediterranean cuisine, featuring dishes like smoked swordfish, steak tartare, poached lobster, and grilled chicken.
Castelo dos Hamburgos
Castelo dos Hamburgos is a well-known family-run restaurant in Funchal. It provides an intimate and welcoming dining experience amongst traditional décor plenty of ceramic tiles and archways. The menu is typical of a hamburger hotspot, with a hearty selection of burgers, including a super hamburger and a special hamburger. There are also a wide variety of flavoured milkshakes and fruit smoothies to wash your hamburger down with. This is the perfect place to eat if you're looking for quick, quality food on a budget.
Things to do in Funchal in June
For a summer stroll head to the Palheiro gardens which are a series of interconnected gardens showcasing a huge variety of colourful tropical plants. At this time of year the flowers are in full bloom, providing a delicious range of scents and sights. You can stroll along the pathways or take a seat on one of the many secluded benches dotted around and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.
