Estepona Weather May Averages, Spain

    Estepona Weather for May 2021

What's the weather like in Estepona in May

With summer just around the corner, May takes the temperatures further up, reaching an average of 18°C (64°F), a most comfortable and welcome warmth which borders on heat on the sunnier days of the month. The expected high average will most likely exceed 20°C, while the nights will be pleasant at 15°C, with a most tolerable humidity of 72% on average and non-oppressive dew points.

    Sunshine Hours

The days get even longer, encompassing up to 12 full hours of glorious sunshine, and chances of sunny days hike up to 41% on average a most welcoming and optimistic view of late spring on Costa del Sol.

    Humidity and Rainfall

The lower humidity further reduces rainfall as well, which barely touches the 22mm mark, and precipitation is not expected to touch down for more than 8 days throughout the entire month so the worst you can possibly expect in May in Estepona is the occasional short summer shower, and nothing else. Chances of rain are down at 18% on average, and chances of cloudy days drop to 11% as well, giving way to bright blue skies, white fluffs of clouds and a mighty Mediterranean sunshine and breeze to reign over this splendiferous coastline.

With the cherry blossoms in full swing, the winds stay bold at 2.5m/s as an average speed, and most of these currents are warm and coming from the south and south-east, particularly from the neighbouring North-African regions across the sea. Chances of windy days stay high at 52% on average, which in conjunction with the warmer but still strong sea current are bound to produce some pretty good waves, perfectly choppy for sailing and windsurfing.

    Sea Temperature

The sea temperature is a robust 18°C (65°F), now better for swimming and quick splashes around the shore. The deeper end will obviously be deceivingly cool, so we do recommend sticking to beaches with a shallow entry, and doing your best to enjoy them from midday onwards, when the sun is hot enough to sustain a wonderful beach environment.

    Estepona Beaches for May

    Playa Galera

With all the urbanizations in the area of Estepona, it has become easier to access some of the area's splendid beaches. Playa Galera, for example, is a 2km stretch of golden sand, bounded at the west by the Torre de la Sal headland, running all the way down to the next headland of Bahia Dorada. It's only 40m wide but with a soft shallow entry, perfect for those almost-hot afternoons of late May.

It's not very busy, particularly during this time of the year, and you'll also find a chiringuito open k chiringuitos are great during the summer as they offer deliciously fresh fish and seafood alongside pitchers of cold lemonade and tropical cocktails galore the best treat for any self-respecting beachgoer. There's also a pedestrian promenade lining most of the beach, and there's good car access.

    Bars and Restaurants

    La Rada

On the east boulevard of Avenida Espana, you'll find the delightful La Rada, a very well-known and established upmarket seafood restaurant with outside terraces.

Very popular for the Spanish locals, this restaurant makes a habit out of serving nothing but fresh fish and seafood dishes, complementing them with an impressive wine list to match. It's been open for 18 years already, but it was completely refurbished and modernized in 2006, and it's part of the same ownership as that of the super hip Club Nautico fish restaurant in the port.

    El Pescador

El Pescador is another excellent yummy option if you're out and about in Estepona in May, as its right in the heart of Edificio Madrid on the esplanade of Estepona Boulevard. This is a seafront venue with a superb terrace right by the beach.

There are special menus and daily specials always available, and the service is always excellent with fine attention to details. The fish and seafood is all locally and responsibly sourced, and the condiments and produce used to complete El Pescador's wonderful dishes are locally grown and harvested, supporting the region's farmers. It's normally open daily during the summer, but you'll find it closed on Mondays off season.

Now it's a good time to start hitting those beach bars, where the music is hot and the cool cocktails often come on special offers. Lolailo's can be found in Estepona West, on the splendid Playa del Cristo. It's located in one of the city's most beautiful bays and also offers sun bed and drink service on the beach!

Things to do in Estepona in May

    Dallas Love

With the mercury popping up in the thermometer and the sun refusing to hide behind clouds during the day, May is one of the best months to enjoy some proper horse riding at the popular Dallas Love. The ranch is nestled along the splendid and picturesque village of Bubion above Granada, and for a good price you can mount a gentle and well-tempered part-Arab Andalusian horse for a short or day-long mountain trek, inclusive of a delicious picnic lunch. The trail itself unravels stunning views of the towering Sierra Nevada mountain range, with an abundant wildlife and indigenous flora to keep you delighted along the way.

    Wolf Howl Nights

One of Costa del Sol's most fascinating activities starts regularly in May, and it is dedicated to raising respect and awareness of the fragile ecosystem of wolves in the country. Take part in the Wolf Howl Nights and come hear the wolves call out to the moon!

See the pack at their activity peak during the night, and enjoy a barbecue on the terrace with a superb view of El Torcal during the sunset. This is a truly unique and original experience as it brings you closer to this majestic predator, and it's certainly not something you can get access to anywhere in the world.

Most people settle for admiring the rumbling mountainside from the comfort of a pool lounger by the hotel's terrace. However we wholeheartedly recommend going out and actually experiencing a day or two in the heart of Costa del Sol's most charming wild side, in the surroundings of the legendary Mijas.

Discover hidden valleys and pine forests, walk through old open mines where the Romans once searched for precious elements. You can easily walk from one side of the mountain where you can admire the Mediterranean, to the other side where you can gaze upon inland Spain. Visit the Shrine of Calvario which always seems to float on the mountain blanket above Mijas. One suggestion of touring the area properly is via the Guide to the Sierra de Mijas, organized by Juan Antonoio Gomez Alarcon, which also offers good insights into the local flora and fauna.
