November Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

While the calendar may suggest that November is still a part of autumn, it is definitely feeling more like winter in Edinburgh during this time of the year. As a result, the number of tourists visiting the city drops of significantly as many visitors don't want to deal with the chilly conditions and lack of sun.

Visitors looking for warmer conditions might want to try elsewhere in Europe as the weather is not for the faint of heart. Of course, the coldest conditions are felt first thing in the morning when the average overnight low falls to 3°C (37°F). Temperatures are not able to rise much due to the cloud cover and lack of sunshine during this time of the year and will only top out at 9°C (48°F). When combined with a strong wind coming in off the water, temperatures will feel much colder than the actually are. As a result, it is wise to pack a heavy coat and plenty of accessories to guard against the chill. The overall daily temperature is only 6°C (43°F).

With precipitation likely and temperatures hovering just a few degrees above freezing in the early morning hours, a snowflake or two is not out of the question. However, the chances of any frozen precipitation are much greater later in the month as temperatures continue to fall. Overall, the region expects to receive an average of 70mm of precipitation over a period of 21 days. Additionally, there is not much sun as the city only expects to receive 1 hour of sunshine per day.

Water temperatures are also too cold to enjoy with numbers averaging 11°C (52°F). And with air temperatures as cold as they are, it is also not possible to enjoy the beaches. This time of the year is best spent exploring the city and also enjoy the numerous museums, restaurants and pubs.

Where to Stay

The Edinburgh Residence is the perfect place for a November holiday when you are looking for a little more space than can be found in a traditional hotel. The hotel offers five-star luxury in each of its 29-townhouse suites. Each suite features free WiFi, fully furnished kitchen, bathrobe, slippers and a flatscreen TV. Other amenities include 24-hour room service and afternoon tea among many others.

If you have Marriot points, what better place to use them than at the Edinburgh Marriott Hotel. Restaurants and Nightlife

Fine dining at its best can be found at Restaurant Martin Wishart. This Michelin starred restaurant serves classic French dishes by incorporating fresh Scottish ingredients. Reservations are highly recommended at this elegant restaurant that is perfect for a romantic evening out.

Michael Neave's Kitchen and Whiskey Bar offers beautifully prepared dishes served with perfectly matched whiskey. The menu includes such dishes as ribeye steak, wild mushroom gnocchi, and sea bass. Each dish is freshly prepared and uses only local ingredients. Be sure to stop in for a meal and a drink that won't easily be forgotten.

Located along the Royal Mile Deacon Brodie's Tavern is the perfect spot for a late night drink. This traditional pub has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and is the perfect spot to sample one of the numerous beers and enjoy some good pub food. Be sure to put this spot on your list of pubs you must visit while in town.

Things to Do

With the weather in November being downright cold, now is the time to look for indoor adventures and one of the best can be found at the National Museum of Scotland. With exhibitions perfect for those of all ages, visitors can meet a T-Rex, discover gold from the Iron Age, and check out a Nobel Peace Prize. With treasures from around the world, this is one spot not to be missed.

While not as famous as Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse is a great place to stop and explore. Home to the British monarchy in Scotland, the Queen spends one week a year in residence. When the Royal Family is not in residence, the apartments and house are open to visitors. If the weather is cooperating, be sure to explore the grounds, but even if you are forced indoors, there is plenty of art and antiques to admire.
