June Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

June ushers in not only the beginning of the summer season, but also the high point of the tourist season as well. Thanks to the warmer weather, now is the time that most visitors flock to Edinburgh to explore the nooks and crannies of the old city and enjoy a holiday away from mainland Europe. Because of the nearby cold waters, the temperature in the city is cooled thanks to its effects and the result is a much cooler summer than is felt in other parts of the continent.

Temperatures during the month are not quite the warmest of the year, but they are close. The overall average daily temperature is a pleasant 13°C (55°F). Mornings and overnight, of course, are still the coldest part of the day with average low temperatures falling to 9°C (48°F). However, afternoon temperatures will rebound nicely and eventually climb to 17°C (63°F) by the end of the day. Visitors will still want to layer their clothing as temperatures warm and be wary of a breeze coming off the ocean that can make it feel much colder than it actually is.

Raincoats are still needed as rainfall amounts continue to climb from the previous two months. Overall, rain is expected over a period of 20 days. With just 10 dry days throughout the month, chances are good that you will need a raincoat or umbrella at some point during your holiday. Over that time frame, the city receives an expected average of 60mm of rain.

If you can dodge the raindrops, now is the time to head to the beach. Not only can you enjoy the 6 hours of sunshine expected each day, but sea surface temperatures have warmed enough for visitors to enjoy various water sports. Overall, water temperatures are at an average of 12°C (54°F). While these temperatures do require the use of a wetsuit, it is possible to get in the nearby ocean.

Where to Stay

The Chester Residence offers five-star service in an apartment style setting. Each apartment comes immaculately furnished and guests are treated to such amenities as full reception and concierge service, robes and slippers, free WiFi and more. All of the one or two bedroom units come with living rooms and fully fitted kitchens. This award-winning hotel is a step above and one that offers you luxury at every turn.

Located just five minutes out of the city, the Prestonfield is one of the most prestigious hotels in the region. With opulent furnishings throughout the public and private areas of the hotel, no expense has been spared. Located in a home originally built in 1687, the hotel features award-winning restaurants, a whisky bar, gardens, and even a helicopter-landing pad.

Known as a luxury, boutique hotel, The Raeburn has all the amenities you could ask for. Built in 1832, the hotel boasts only 10 guestrooms, restaurant, bar, library and more. Guests are treated to personalised service in a traditional Scottish hotel that is located in a beautiful part of the city. This is the perfect spot for a June holiday.

Hit the Beach

One of closest beaches to Edinburgh is Portobello. Fondly known as Porty Beach, this is also one of the most popular beaches in the region and offers something for everyone. With temperatures climbing on land and in the sea, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the two miles of beach, Turkish Baths and amusement games. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs nearby for when hunger or thirst strikes. Just keep in mind that this beach can get very crowded during the more beautiful days.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Making the list as one of the best restaurants in the city is a traditional Turkish eatery. While Ada Restaurant may only be about two years old, it has already made its mark on Edinburgh. All dishes are freshly prepared and successfully blend traditional Turkish and Mediterranean flavours.

If you are looking for a true out of this world culinary experience, be sure to pay a visit to Number One at The Balmoral. This Michelin starred restaurant offers modern Scottish cuisine including caviar, tarts, and smoked salmon. Reservations are highly recommended well in advance in order to guarantee a table.

With so many pubs, it is hard to pick just one. However, that is no longer a problem thanks to the Edinburgh Pub Crawl. Started in 2013, the tour has quickly become one of the more popular tours in all of Scotland. Tours are conducted every night of the week and visit numerous pubs throughout the city. Included in the price are five shots, one cocktail, one bomb and discounted additional drinks.

Things to Do

Known as the longest continually running film festivals in the world, the Edinburgh International Film Festival takes place each June. Running for 12 days, this is one event film fans will not want to miss. Overall, the festival helps to find and promote some of the best in international films.

With temperatures now climbing and averaging 13°C (55°F), this is the time of the year to hit the links. Any golf fan should not miss the beautiful courses upon which the game was invented. The good news is the region is home to some of the most famous golf courses in the land. Muirfield has not only hosted The British Open on numerous occasions, but it is also open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursday. Be sure to schedule some time in your holiday to play on some of the most famous courses the world has to offer.
