The average temperature in June can reach a sweltering 27°C and humidity is up to 57% during midday. On a very hot day temperatures can soar up to 32°C, whilst on a cool day average temperatures can decrease to 22°C. However, even with all this hot weather there's still a large amount of rainfall. The month of June receives on average 170mm of rainfall and it's very common for afternoon storms to occur. June is also the best month for hours of sunshine as on average there's a maximum of 11 hours per day.
Officially the hurricane season starts on June 1st, however you don't really have to worry about this threat as they rarely occur in this month and are more likely to arrive in mid-August. June is also one of the busiest months of the year at Walt Disney World, especially at the weekends where there are numerous events going on such as Star Wars Weekends.
Things to do
Downtown Disney is a great place to go to after dark or if you want a break from the other four main theme parks. If you are looking for some evening entertainment look no further than AMC Downtown Disney 24, located within the Downtown Disney grounds. All the current box office movies are played here at this 24-theatre complex, with state of the art equipment. Or if you want to escape from the heat come and visit Splitsville Luxury Lanes, this two-storey bowling alley is one of the best places for family entertainment as you can choose from 30 bowling lanes or play on one of the billiards tables.
The best way to cool off in June is to spend the day at Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park. There are so many rides to try here from snow-castle mountains to toboggan races down the Cross Country Creek. If you feel daring you should definitely have a go on Summit Plummet, one of the tallest and fastest waterslides in the whole world! Or why not have a race with your family and friends on one of the three water slides at Snow Stormers. Race along on one of the toboggan-style mats plummeting through 350-foot long waterslides.
From June 9th to July 27thSounds Like Summer Concert Series is held at Epcot Theme Park to celebrate the beginning of summer. Come and join in with the party at this open-air concert and listen to some excellent tribute bands featuring Stayin' Alive a tribute to the BeeGees, and The Police Experience.
If your kids are fans of Pixar's Cars movie they will love Car Masters Weekend located in Downtown Disney. From June the 15th to the 16th you can view over 150 vehicles and take pictures with some of your most beloved characters from Cars and Cars 2, featuring Finn McMissile and Lightning McQueen.
On the other hand Star Wars Weekends takes place throughout May and June and features characters from the popular saga including Darth Vader, the storm troopers and Chewbacca. Kids under 12 can also join the Jedi Training Academy and learn how to perfect their light saber skills, with the opportunity to take on Darth Vader himself.
Time to celebrate
As June can be very hot it may be best to wait until the evening until you decide to go to some shows. Illuminations takes place at 9pm in the Epcot theme park and puts on a spectacular fireworks and laser display over the nearby lake. The fireworks show is so huge it can be viewed from anywhere throughout the World Showcase, but for the best view it's best to head to the World Showcase Lagoon.
The highly popular Main Street Electrical Parade has returned to the Magic Kingdom Theme Park, performing nightly at 9pm and 11pm. This vibrant parade is back and better than ever, with enhanced lighting technology and breath taking special effects. There's also a whole new array of floats from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Pinocchio and the Pleasure Island Boys.
Eating and drinking out
If you're spending the day at Blizzard Beach Water Park you should head to Avalunch for a break from the waterslides. This quick-service restaurant serves delicious hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, chips, pretzels and ice cream, all for a cheap price. Another place to think of in the Blizzard Beach area is Polar Pub. This tropical themed bar offers Frozen Margaritas and Heineken Beers. This is a great place to escape to, from the heat and humidity of June!
In the Downtown Disney Area you will find the Planet Hollywood restaurant, which serves traditional American food such as a New York Strip Steak and BBQ grilled sandwiches. This vibrant restaurant spreads over three levels and is decorated with memorabilia and props from popular Hollywood films. Another option would be Bongos Cuban Café, designed by the famous musician Gloria Estefan and her partner Emilio. This 1950s inspired restaurant offers Caribbean and Cuban cuisine such as Criolla Minced Beef and Milanese Steak.
Where to stay
Disney's Port Orleans Resort French Quarter is a beautiful and romantic hotel designed to look like it was built in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Some of the rooms here even look over the picturesque Sassagoula River in the Downtown Disney Area. Or there's also the option of staying at Disney's Port Orleans Resort Riverside, which was inspired by rural Louisiana architecture. You'll feel like you have stepped back in time staying at this atmospheric hotel. It's also an added bonus that Disney's Osprey Ridge Golf course is not far away!
Hampton Inn Orlando is located on International Drive, only minutes away from the main Orlando attractions including Universal Studios and the Kennedy Space Centre. Services include a shuttle bus to the main points of interest and there's an outdoor pool open all year long. Another cheap option to try is Holiday Inn Express Lake Buena Vista, which is located conveniently half a mile away from Downtown Disney. This hotel also offers a free shuttle service to the Walt Disney World Resort.
