If you have never been to Walt Disney World before then you must come and visit the resort in December. The average temperature reaches 17C, so it's not too hot or too cold. On a very hot day temperatures can rise up to 23C, whilst on a cooler day and in the evenings temperatures can drop to a chilly 10C. However, December is one of the driest months out of the whole year as it only receives on average 52mm of rainfall throughout the whole month. The sunshine hours aren't too bad either as it is expected to receive on average seven hours per day. December is a truly magical time of year to visit Disney as there's so many world-class events going on to celebrate the festive season.
December is the busiest month in winter due to the Christmas holidays and New Years Eve. However, crowds are a lot lower from the start of the month up to about the 14th December when schools start to break up for the festive holiday.
Things to do
On a cool day or if you're out in the evening it's worth visiting the iconic Downtown Disney Area which offers lots of exciting shopping and entertainment facilities. If you fancy buying some souvenirs for relatives and friends back home or just want something to remember your time at Disney look no further than World of Disney, which sells anything from pirate and princess accessories to Disney character merchandise. However if you would rather spend the evening bowling try the Splitsville Luxury Lanes. This modern two-storey bowling alley contains 30 bowling lanes, billiards tables and two sushi bars.
If your family are fans of the classic Disney movies then you must spend the day at Disney's Hollywood Studios to discover what goes on behind-the-scenes of a blockbuster movie. Hop on board the The Great Movie Ride, which will take you through the gangster films of the 1930s, and the most memorable movie moments of the past century including Fantasia, Mary Poppins and Casablanca. Whilst if you are a fan of Miss Piggy or Kermit the Frog you will love Muppet Vision 3D, which is a hilarious movie experience captured in dynamic 3D, featuring all your favourite Muppet characters.
To celebrate the Christmas holiday it is highly recommended to attend the Holidays Around The World Candlelight Processional at the America Gardens Theatre in Epcot. This popular event tells the story of Christmas told by a special celebrity guest, accompanied by an orchestra and choir to help get you in the festive mood.
Another place to go to for live entertainment is Festival of the Seasons at Downtown Disney, which takes place throughout November and December. Don't forget to bring along your camera as there's the opportunity to meet up with Santa Claus himself and if you want to buy some presents to take back home head to one of the many specialty shops including Disney's Days of Christmas and Once Upon a Toy.
Time to celebrate
From November the 8th to December 20th celebrate the holiday season in style at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom Theme Park. Watch the enchanted Castle Dream Lights at Cinderella Castle or meet with some of your favorite Disney characters! Also if you're lucky enough to spend New Years Eve at Disney World then you must go to the
New Year's Eve Party at DisneyQuest Indoor Interactive Theme Park in the Downtown Disney Area. Take your pick from five floors of video games and 3D encounters and join in with the New Year's Eve countdown.
Eating and drinking out
Fulton's Crab House is a replica of an authentic riverboat restaurant by the waterfront at Downtown Disney Marketplace. This romantic eatery serves freshly caught seafood from around the world including Alaskan Crab Legs and Australian Lobster Trail. However, if you are not too fond of eating seafood head to Wolfgang Puck Cafe at Downtown Disney to try some delicious Asian and Californian cuisine such as a Caesar Salad and Chocolate Lava cake.
Try some classic American dishes such as a Grilled Chicken Sandwich or a Flame-broiled New York Strip Steak at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre, situated in Disney's Hollywood studios. Once you arrive here you can choose to eat your meal in one of the 50's era cars and watch some classic science fiction films such as "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Or why not try the Art deco themed Hollywood & Vine, which puts on a tasty buffet at all times of the day.
Where to stay
Disney's All-Star Movies Resort is located inside the Disney World resort at Animal Kingdom. This bright and colourful hotel includes giant iconic statue of characters from blockbuster movies such as The Love Bug, One Hundred and One Dalmatians and Toy Story. Each room is also themed after one of these movies so it's the perfect hotel to take your kids to for an unforgettable stay at Disney World. A more pricy option is Disney's Port Orleans Resort French Quarter, which is inspired by the romantic architecture found in New Orleans. This charming hotel features horse-drawn carriage rides and live jazz music.
Hampton Inn Orlando is located close to all of the major attractions in Orlando including Disney World, SeaWorld and Universal Studios. There's also a fitness centre and an outdoor pool on site, which is perfect for those hot days in December which still surprisingly occur! Another more affordable option to look at is Holiday Inn Express Lake Buena Vista. This contemporary and comfortable hotel is only half a mile away from Downtown Disney and offers a free shuttle bus service to and from the Walt Disney World Resort!
