Things to do in Crete in July
Surfing and Windsurfing
Crete's diverse beaches and numerous conflicting winds make the island a popular spot for surfing and windsurfing. Surf can come from any direction in Crete, but it pays to get in touch with local surfers and windsurfers to find out the best spots, plus to be aware of the pitfalls and any risky beaches.
For surfing, there are at least 18 beaches that have been filed internationally as surfing beaches. Between them you can find beginner's beach breaks such as those at Golden Bay and rocky, challenging beaches for experienced surfers such as Sfinari beach.
Windsurfing is even more widespread in Crete, with schools in every major town and virtually every tourist-friendly beach offering windsurfs for rent. However, the local laws prohibit surfing and windsurfing on certain, dangerous beaches so do your homework!
Wine lovers should visit Crete in July as the towns of Rethymnon and Heraklion both host popular wine festivals during this month. The wine festival in Rethymnon is a lively, two-week celebration of Cretan wine and spirits, marked by local music and lots of festivities. Visitors are asked to pay a small entrance fee and bring their own glasses, then it's all you can drink from the local wineries - cheers!
Heraklion Dafnes Wine Festival
Free wine and tsikoudia are also at the epicentre of the Heraklion "Dafnes Wine Festival". Typically held between 5th and 15th of July, the Dafnes focuses more on Cretan tradition and also explores Cretan cuisine as well as wine and tsikoudia. Visitors are treated to a lot of local food to soak up the free wine sensibly.
Held at the end of July, Yakinthia festival combines traditional folk tradition with Cretan music, to celebrate love and hope. An unforgettable experience in a beautiful, natural environment. A domed chapel constructed of flat stones was built to honour St. Hyacinth, the Patron Saint of love. Along side this chapel, sits a stone theatre where concerts are held beneath the shadows of trees.
