Things to do in Corfu in March
In February, it's best to stay indoors, to here's your time to hit the museums. Oddly enough, the Asian Art Museum exhibits exquisite collections of artefacts from China, Japan, Tibet, Southeast Asia and Gandhara.
Drop by the Archaeological Museum, located in south Corfu Town. Built in 1965, it houses a collection of ancient artefacts from the island. Main exhibits include an impressive 17m gorgon pediment (590 b.c.e.) excavated from the Temple of Artemis at Paleopolis. The sculpture is so massive it dominates an entire room. Within the museum, you can also find a marble torso of Apollo, the lion of Menecrates, and a pediment of Dionysus.
From the New Fortress you can get a wonderful view of the old port and tiled roofs. Although built by the Venetians between 1572 and 1645, the British and the French completed the fortification works. Or wander down to the Old Fortress on the east, which houses a former Latin chapel, and a collection of Byzantine icons and mosaics.
If you want to get out of Corfu Town for the day, why not take a visit to the Corfu Shell Museum in Benitses. The Museum displays the private collection of a Corfiot who used to dive in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
