Corfu Beaches for August

Gardenos Beach, located in the southern tip of Corfu Island, is a quiet retreat for those looking to get out of town. The two-kilometre beach is supremely clean, tapered at the end by a tiny fishing port. A perfect haven for swimmers and sunbathers.

Bars and Restaurants

Your holiday will not be complete unless you experience some traditional Greek dancing. Just 7 km to the south-west of Corfu Town is the Tripa Taverna. Here you'll be guaranteed excellent food, followed by a display of dancing. As the evening goes on, diners get the chance to join in as well!

If you fancy a change from traditional Greek cuisine, why not check out the excellent Da Giovanni restaurant in the centre of town. As the name suggests, this is an Italian eating house run by a restaurateur from Naples.

If you happen to be driving around the west side of the island, stop by Elizabeth's, a unique family-run eatery established in the 1940s. Sample a bit of homestyle pastitsada and potatoes with peas. Located in Doukades village, just inland from Paleokastritsa. 

Things to do in Corfu in August

If you're visiting Corfu Town, the Achillion Palace in the village of Gastouri is a must-see. This palace was built by the Empress Elisabeth of Austria as a retreat from the life of the Austrian Court and was later to feature in the Bond movie For Your Eyes Only.

The kids will love a trip to Aqualand. Billed as one of the most amazing and adventurous water parks in Europe, this adventure playground is the ideal way to cool off during the hot summer days.

Get out of town and explore the Byzantine ruins of Angelokastro. Located on the highest peak near Paleokastritsa, this 305m (1,000ft) citadel served as the capital of Corfu from the 14th to the 16th centuries. It was a main fortification in defence against possible Venetian invaders.

The most worthwhile day trip is a ferry to Sarande in Albania, for the Roman ruins of Butrint. There are only a few ferries a day, so be sure to plan your trip accordingly. Alternatively, you can charter a boat out to the Diapondia Islands, just northwest of Corfu.
