Things to do in Colombo in January

Colombo is a city steeped in history, with a rich heritage on display. At least a day of your holiday should be spent sight seeing. There are plenty of important sites to investigate, including the President's House and Old Parliament building. Evidence of its colonial rule is apparent throughout the city.

Generally, there are festivals all year round in Colombo, but in January, tourists can look forward to the Duruthu Perahera Festival. This is held annually at the Kelaniya temple to celebrate the Buddha's first visit to the island nation.

The festival, which was first held in 1927, involves three main processions that march around the capital city and features a number of dancers, actors, elephant acts and carnival acts. Most of the devotees are dressed in white for the festival.

The Colombo museum is a must see tourist attraction.

It was built in 1877 and houses a number of the country's historical treasures. Anyone wishing to know more about the Island's culture will find a lot of information documenting important historical events.

However, the Museum is not open on Fridays. This is to honor the constructor's wish that the museum remain closed every Friday avoid distracting Colombo's Muslim community from their prayers.

Tourists should also visit the Dehiwala Zoo. It was started as a private business in the mid-1920s, but was later acquired by the government. The zoological garden is home to a number of endangered species. However, the main attraction is the evening elephant show, which is held daily. The show begins at around five.
