Things to do in Colombo in August
August is an extremely important month in Sri Lanka. Usually, the KandyEsala festival that begins in late July will still be going on. The festival, which is held to pray for rain and to celebrate Sri Lanka's greatest treasure, the Buddha's tooth, goes on for ten days. The festivities increase in momentum and size until the final day.
It is interesting to note that Sri Lanka has gone to war with both India and China over the tooth. There are also a number of stories that surround the tooth, with one of them claiming that the Portuguese once took the tooth away, destroyed it and scattered the remnants in the sea, but it reformed and flew back to Sri Lanka.
Whether the story is true or false, it provides both the Citizens of the island nation and tourists with a marvelous festival, which is often referred to as Asia's most glamorous festival.
