Located on Cuba's northern coast, the island of Cayo Coco in February offers a delightful respite from the harsh European winter. The sub-tropical climate makes this an ideal hub for water-sport aficionados and lovers of the great outdoors.

The best time to visit Cuba is winter, which is when the temps are at their most comfortable. The additional bonus of little rain makes for ideal water-sport conditions as well as brilliant sun bathing times.

The weather in February is still chilly by Cuban standards and although you'll see locals rugged up, you may well wonder what the fuss is all about. The average temperature in February is 23°C, although highs of 28°C can be expected during the last two weeks of the month, as the winter cold subsides. You can expect an average of 8 hours of sunshine each day and rainfall will still be minimal this month. Only 6 days in February will be marred by short showers and this, coupled with comfortable sea temperatures of 26°C, will make for fantastic scuba diving excursions.

Yet they all boasts varied services and in-house activities, as well as varying prices, so to this end it may help to work out what your priorities are before you even start your search.

Melia Cayo Coco is arguably the most luxurious resort and the Traveller's Award Winner for 2014. Designed with the discerning adult crowd in mind (no-child policy), this resort is an ideal choice for honeymooning couples or anyone who wants to enjoy a quiet, opulent vacation in premium style. The resort is built around a saltwater lagoon home to a colony of pink flamingos and the lake-front bungalows built on stilts afford privacy and relaxation like nothing else you could imagine. Melia is the only property in Cayo Coco which offers over-water bungalows. The resort's private beach is pristine, albeit on the smaller side but if your priority is quality over quantity then you'll feel right at home. Melia offers a wide range of services, including its own diving centre, craft workshop, gym, mini-market, gift shop, car rental option and 24-hour medical assistance.

For fantastic sundowners, we suggest you head up to Carambola, a terraced bar overlooking the beautiful lagoon. Pool tables, gorgeous views and flowing cocktails make this by far the most popular choice at the resort.

If you're curious to try local specialties then we suggest you book a table at Tryp Cayo Coco's La Casita Cubana, considered by many to be one of the best Cuban-cuisine restaurants around. If you prefer to taste freshly caught seafood insetad, then make your reservations at Del Mar. For a fun night out, check out cabaret show at La Cueva de Jabali on Wednesday nights.  The cabaret may not be totally out of this world but the venue, in a trendy underground cafe, is what makes a night here very unique indeed.
