What's the weather like in Bermuda in December?

Climate

December is winter in Bermuda, but it has a much more pleasant and mild climate than many European destinations at this time of year. Temperatures in this month are similar to those found at Caracas in Venezuela and are ideal for active holidays exploring the island without getting too hot and sticky. Visitors who prefer warmer conditions might like to travel in the summer months such as June or July when the temperatures get very hot. Temperature

It is a little cool for swimming at this time of year with sea temperatures at 19°C so it might be wise to wear a wetsuit if snorkelling. The air temperatures are also cooler and average temperatures are down to 20°C during the day with average highs of 22°C and lows of 18°C. Temperatures are falling as the month progresses so it is better to visit at the beginning of December than at the end if you prefer warmer weather. The highest recorded temperature in this month was 26°C and the lowest was 10°C.

Sunshine Hours

The days are approximately the same length throughout the month and there are about 5 hours of sunshine each day, one of the lowest of the year. The sun rises in December at 7.15am and sets at 5.15pm so days are short and it is important to get out and about to make the most of the daylight.

Humidity and Rainfall

Humidity is less oppressive now as the temperature has dropped and varies from 60% to 85%. The winds are out of the south and west and can range from 5 mph to 21 mph, which is a light to fresh breeze. Sometime the winds can pick up to a high wind speed of 33 mph but doesn't often exceed this. On average, this is not a particularly wet month and visitors can expect 120mm of rainfall over 18 days in the month. The sky is clear or mostly clear around 18% of the time in December with cloud cover on average 80% to 85% and tending to become cloudier later in the month.

For those who prefer self-catering holidays, the Robins nest guest apartments is a good budget option. Located in Hamilton and up the hill, inland from the beach, this is a good choice for visitors who want to stay in the town area of Bermuda but still within easy walk of the beaches and attractions of the area. The resort offers free Wi-Fi, cable TV, a fully equipped kitchen with fridge and microwave, barbecue facilities and a pool. The property also has a daily maid service.

Greenbank Guesthouse

Situated in Paget, close to Hamilton harbour and all the amenities on offer, is the Greenbank guesthouse. This waterfront hotel is set in lovely gardens, within walking distance of many restaurants, bars and cafes in the area and an easy drive to Elbow beach, the Botanical gardens and the nearest golf course. The spacious rooms have a small kitchenette; free Wi-Fi and overlook the gardens or Hamilton harbour. Run by a local family for the last 50 years, this is an historic property with parts of the building around 200 years old.

La Trottoria

For an authentic Italian meal at great value, try the La Trattoria restaurant in Hamilton. Tucked away near the mall, this is worth seeking out and is popular with local residents. The menu has dishes such as pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven, pasta, seafood, meats and salads in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with attentive and welcoming staff. The ambience is rustic Italian, there is a kid's menu and a wine menu so there is something for everyone.

Beluga Bar

If you fancy something lighter for lunch or dinner, try some sushi at Beluga bar in Hamilton. This is a modern and vibrant restaurant that serves delicious traditional Japanese sushi with a western twist. There are local and fresh fish and seafood sushi and sashimi options that are prepared fresh and fast for you. The dishes are presented with flair and there are vegetarian options and deserts available on the menu.

Henry VIII Restaurant

For the best Sunday brunch on the island, go to Henry VIII restaurant in Southampton Parish. Located on the south shore this pub has been open for 40 years and has tasty food and great entertainment in a beautiful area.  The menu has traditional pub fare, sushi as well as salads, pasta, seafood and meat dishes. There is an extensive wine list and beers on tap in the oak pub room where there is late night entertainment. This is a good place to catch up with friends, take the family for lunch or enjoy an evening out for a few drinks. 

Things to do in Bermuda in December

St. George

In the cooler December weather, it is a good time to get out and about and explore the island. Go to St George, a UNESCO world heritage site and the first English settlement in Bermuda in the early 1600's. This is a small town with a lot of history, from the buildings and architecture to the coastal fortifications and cannons. Located in the town is the World Heritage Centre for visitors to find out more about the town's fascinating past. There are historical re-enactments, presentations and displays that bring the history of the area to life.

Crystal Caves

Head underground to see the amazing Crystal Caves during your holiday to Bermuda. This is a top tourist attraction and is a must-see when visiting the island. Experience the beauty of the underground pools with stunning blue water, the rare chandelier clusters and the stalactites hanging from the ceiling. The passageways take you deeper into the caves and the state of the art lighting system allows visitors to see the cave structures and formations clearly.
