Grand Hotel Terminus

The Grand Hotel Terminus is an old three-star hotel in a building designated as one of Bergen's heritage sites.  The hotel has been in operation for almost 100 years and maintains that character today.  The hotel features 131 rooms with bright & colorful furnishings for up to three people, flatscreen TVs, desks, and walk-in showers.  Some rooms also offer tubs and balconies with great views.  The Terminus Whiskeybar has consistently made numerous "top bar" lists and has also been voted Norway's best whiskeybar.  This classic bar lounge also serves stonebaked pizza and other light fare.  A complimentary breakfast is included for all guests.  The hotel also has a small gym and provides loaner bicycles.  The Grand Hotel Terminus is next to the Bergen train station.

Comfort Hotel Holberg is a casual three-star hotel on Nordnes peninsula with views overlooking the harbor.  This hotel features 159 rooms with deluxe bedding, light, modern bathrooms, flatscreen TVs, WiFi, and an overall minimalistic Scandinavian décor.  A complimentary breakfast is provided for all guests, and it also includes gluten-free and lactose-free options.  A 24-hour deli is available where you can purchase refreshments, sandwiches, and light snacks.  Other hotel amenities include a gym and a rooftop terrace.  The science center and aquarium are close to the hotel, and both the nearest bus and train station are a 10 to 15 minute walk away.

Scandic Kokstad

Scandic Kokstad is a comfortable three-star hotel near the Bergen Airport.  This simple yet comfortable hotel offers numerous rooms decorated in a minimalistic Scandinavian style and modern furnishings, flatscreen TVs, WiFi, and minifridges.  Family rooms and suites are also available for long-term guests, featuring kitchenettes and living areas.  You'll find one restaurant at the Scandic Kokstad that serves seasonal Norwegian and international cuisine.  Other amenities include a chic art deco bar, fitness center, and sauna.  City center is accessible by the light rail system and a complimentary airport shuttle is available.  Scandic Kokstad is also close to the Lagunen shopping center.

Bars and Restaurants

Ácido

Hotel Oleana is one of Bergen's newest hotels and has a lot of character.  Their signature restaurant is Ácido, a contemporary restaurant specializing in South American tapas.  Their menu consists of many different ceviches, soups, tacos, grilled pork with beans & avocado puree, and white fish with a sweet potato cream.  Their bartenders serve some great craft cocktails and you'll also find good beer and wine selections.  The ambience is warm & trendy and the service is outstanding.  Ácido is open Monday through Saturday from noon until 10PM and reservations are accepted.

Sumo Restaurant Vestre Torggate

Sumo is one of Bergen's highest-rated sushi restaurants.  They are located in central Bergen with a dining room that definitely looks nothing like Norway and more like Japan.  This is actually a chain with a few other restaurants in outer Bergen too.  Their menu takes advantage of Bergen's outstanding seafood market, serving outstanding sashimi, nigiri, and unique rolls.  They also serve noodle dishes, grilled steaks, and vegetarian dishes.  They are open from noon until 10PM Monday through Thursday, noon until 11PM Friday & Saturday, and 2PM to 10PM on Sunday.  They will deliver to local hotels.

Brasilia Bergen

Brasilia Bergen is Bergen's first and only authentic Brazilian steakhouse.  The dining room has a wonderful South American rustic ambience.  Dining at Brasilia Bergen is a fun experience and quite easy.  Visit the buffet to load up your plate with side items and have a seat at your table.  The staff will then come by your table with giant skewers full of flavorful, tender beef, juicy chicken, pork, and lamb.  When you can't physically fit any more food into your stomach, you turn the green coaster over to the red side and they'll leave you to your cocktails.  Brasilia Bergen is open Monday from 4PM to 10PM, Tuesday through Thursday from 4PM to 11PM, Friday & Saturday from 4PM to midnight, and Sunday from 3PM to 10PM.  Reservations are accepted.

Vinyl

Vinyl is a laid back, cozy late night bar in central Bergen.  They have great bartenders and a very friendly staff to help you relax.  Their food menu mostly consists of sliders, fries, and dips.  They prepare their sliders in a number of different ways that always earn great reviews, and they can also prepare vegetarian sliders.  The tap wall behind the bar is full of draft beers from all over the world, and they also have a full bar.  Vinyl is open Sunday & Monday from 4PM to 12:30AM, Tuesday through Thursday from 4PM to 1:30AM, and Friday & Saturday from 3PM to 2:30AM.

Things to do in Bergen in November

Bergen Maritime Museum

You can't avoid Bergen's maritime traditions anywhere in the city it's a major part of their life.  The Bergen Maritime Museum was established in 1914 to preserve and showcase their nautical heritage.  Exhibits include recreations of ancient vessels, artifacts dating back hundreds of years, trade ships, and warships from both World Wars.  Rotating exhibits and films also make their way through the museum.  There is also a collection of nautical artwork and a library selling gifts.  The Bergen Maritime Museum is located at the university and is open daily from 11AM to 3PM.

Pepperkakebyen

Get in the Christmas spirit at Pepperkakebyen, which translates into Gingerbread Town.  This is the world's largest gingerbread city and opens in mid November.  There are gingerbread sculptures of everything in this cookie town boats, houses, trains, swimming pools, churches, and cars.  The entire city participates in building this massive display, and the kids probably have the most fun.  The display is located in central Bergen near the harbor and you can support the display buy purchasing gingerbread cookies during your visit.  But you'd probably want to do that anyways.

Bryggen Hanseatic Museum

Bryggen's fascinating medieval history is on display at the Hanseatic Museum, a large colorful building near the harbor.  The museum itself is one of the oldest standing buildings in Bergen, having escaped the fires that have swept through.  The museum showcases the lives of the Hanseatic trade merchants that helped Bergen become the city that it is today.  Living quarters were found in this and neighboring buildings, and one of the rooms hasn't been touched since the early 1700s, offering insight into this period.  The neighboring Schotstuene building, which is covered by your admission paid to the Hanseatic museum, served as assembly halls.  In September the museum is open from 9AM to 5PM.

KODE Art Museums

Another one of Bergen's renowned art centers is the KODE art museums.  This complex is made up of four large galleries at Lille Lungegaardsvannet park and also a number of smaller museums and galleries around the greater Bergen area.  Of the four main galleries & museums in central Bergen, KODE 1 is where they have a collection of classical fine art including sculptures and other works from around the world.  KODE 2 features much more contemporary exhibits, and KODE 3 houses a collection from Norwegian artists.  KODE 4 is unique in that it's the first fine art museum in Norway targeted to children.  Some of the galleries have restaurants and cafes on the property, and there are also others to choose from in the surrounding neighborhoods.

VilVite Bergen Science Center

Bergen has a fun interactive science center that both kids and adults will enjoy visiting.  It's perfect for a cold rainy day.  Bergen Science Center VilVite is housed in a modern glass building that features over 100 exhibits.  The exhibits range from the human body, outer space, marine environment, weather, and energy.  You can try your hand at giving a weather forecast in front of TV cameras, ride a bike in a 360-degree G force loop, and navigate a ship through weather.  There are also a number of both educational & entertaining 3D films and other science demonstrations periodically showing at the science center.  The science center is open Tuesday through Friday from 9AM to 3PM and on weekends from 10AM to 5PM.
