Things to do in Bergen in July

Bryggen Medieval Wharf

Bryggen is one of Bergen's most photographed and most recognized areas.  The neighborhood was established in the 12th century and has gone through many cycles of destruction and rebuilding, mostly by fire.  Today Bryggen is on UNESCO's World Heritage Site List.  Walking through Bryggen is truly walking through time; the narrow cobbled streets were once the headquarters of the Hanseatic League trade empire.  In these buildings today you'll find delicious restaurants, cozy cafes, and shops selling handcrafted items from a variety of trades.  The Bryggens Hanseatic Museum is also a popular attraction, showcasing the various archeological finds around Bergen throughout the centuries.

Hardanger Fjord

One of Norway's most recognized natural landmarks is Hardanger Fjord.  This fjord is 80km south of Bergen, is the second longest fjord in Norway, and the fourth longest fjord in the world.  There are numerous outdoor activities near Hardanger Fjord.  The more adventurous can go river rafting, glacier exploring, and paragliding.  You can also just sit on a boat and relax while the captain takes you through the 900m-tall cliffs and waterfalls.  There are also a number of hikes in the area suitable for all abilities and time constraints.  Some of the villages around Hardanger Fjord also offer lodging options if you want to make a night of it.

Ulriken Mountain

One of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen is Ulriken, climbing 643m above the city right below it.  Many people visit the top of Ulriken just for the spectacular views, but there's also a good restaurant on top and exploring the mountain is a great way to exercise.  There are a few ways to the top; the most difficult is probably by hiking.  You can hike directly to the top of Ulriken or take a trail from the top of nearby Mt. Floyen.  You can also take the cable car to the top, which runs every day from 9AM to 9PM.  After taking the cable car you can hike over to Mt. Floyen and take the funicular down, or just stay at Ulriken and admire the surrounding area through the provided telescopes.

Bergen Aquarium

The Bergen aquarium is wonderful way to spend half the day on Nordnes peninsula.  This aquarium houses over 300 species in 60 different tanks, including some non-marine animals too.  The smaller tanks inside the aquarium feature a variety of small fish and marine invertebrates while the larger outdoor pools feature sea lions, penguins, and crocodiles.  The aquarium has a regular schedule for animal shows, feedings, and interactions with visitors.  You'll also find some monkeys at the Bergen aquarium also.  This is a great place to learn about the sea life that sustains the people of Norway.  The aquarium is open daily from 9AM to 6PM in July.
