Banff Weather January Averages, Canada

    Banff Weather for January 2021

Banff has one of the most variable climates in the world. The climate at one place might be completely different to the other parts of the town, so be prepared. Carry a rain jacket and a sweater at all times because the climate during the day can change suddenly.

It is very cold in January. The average daytime temperatures are around -8°C (17°F), whereas the average minimum temperatures during the night are around -15°C (6°F).

In Banff, you will have to also consider the wind chill; the wind makes it colder than a temperature gauge might show, so, if it is -10°C, it can feel like -20°C due to the wind.

The air in Banff is very dry and as a result the temperatures during the day and night differ greatly. From December to January the length of the day is considerably shorter and the daylight lasts for as little as 8 hours throughout these months.

There is a lot to do in Banff in January. Even though the temperatures are low, the dryness in the air makes the Canadian cold quite bearable in comparison to other, similarly cold, locations. In January the main attraction is of course skiing.

However you can also go on hiking tours, historic tours and even check out the hot springs and geysers. There is also a cable car ride which provides spectacular views of Banff from the top.

In January, Banff also hosts Ice Magic (the international ice sculpture competition and exhibition) which talented sculptors from all over the world attend. Alongside Lake Louise, the sculptors turn huge blocks of ice into works of art. The event is extremely popular in Banff and attracts huge crowds. There are also workshops available for you to take part in.
