Avignon, France, is located in the southeast of the country on the left bank of the Rhône River. This location boasts numerous historical bridges spanning the river which together form some of the biggest tourist attractions not only in this large city, but throughout the Provence region.

With low temperatures of just 1 to 9 degrees Celsius, January is Avignon's coldest month, so it's somewhat surprising that it's also one of the driest with roughly 23 mm on average. Avignon tends to see higher rainfall during the spring and autumn, and lower during the summer and winter, similar to nearby Marseille.

Make the most of the dry weather and head to the Golf de Chateaublanc golf course. The challenging 18 hole course located close to the Avignon-Caumont Airport charges just £33 for a round, with special rates for young putters. Lessons are available, as is equipment rental so no need to find room for a club in the suitcase. The onsite restaurant is a great place to stop for some fast food.

For a more upscale dinner, the Restaurant Christian Etienne is one of the city's most renowned eateries. Owned by a chef born and bred in Provence, aspects of southeast France are evident in the cuisine. The restaurant is situated next to the famous Palais des Papes and offers fantastic views of the historic icon of Avignon.

The 2* Hotel le Colbert is located right in the heart of the city and offers rooms from just £58 per night. It's a very old hotel that fits is effortlessly with its historic surroundings, and is accessed from a quiet back street away from the hustle and bustle of the centre, but within easy walking distance to the best attractions. Rooms are simple yet clean, and brunch is served daily in the breakfast room.
