The Temple of Olympian Zeus is just what it sounds like, an ancient temple built by the Greeks to honor one of their gods, Zeus. It is believed that the temple was built between 470 and 456 BC. The temple was also home to a massive statue of Zeus, which is one of the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World," although it was lost to a fire after it was moved to Constantinople. Fires and earthquakes over the years have destroyed and buried much of the temple, and it was not until the late 19th century that excavations took place, helping bring the ruins to their current state. The temple is about a 10 minute walk from the city centre.
