    What's the Weather like in Amsterdam in November

    November can be wet and chilly in Amsterdam, but it can also still be a very good time of the year to visit.


    Afternoon highs in November have dropped significantly since October and average 9°C (48° F) with average overnight lows around 4°C (39° F).  With temperatures such as these, winter is definitely beginning to set in, but it is still not as cold as it will get later in the season.


    Visitors will need to bring layers and a waterproof jacket because November is the wettest month of the year, averaging 90mm of rain. Much of this falls as a light, liquid drizzle, but there is also the chance of seeing a few light flurries, especially toward the end of the month when the temperatures begin to rapidly fall. However, any white stuff on the ground is typically short lived.

    Things to do in Amsterdam in November

    Royal Palace

    First opened in 1655, the Royal Palace is a must stop for any tourist. This work of art complete with marble and a floor inlaid with maps of the world contains rooms holding paintings, clocks and chandeliers that are museum worthy. A free audio tour is available at the front desk and will explain everything as visitors explore the palace.

    Tour Amsterdam

    Tour Amsterdam's oldest surviving building and check out the stunning Muller organ located inside. Built in 1306, it stands near the active Red Light District, but is actually a church.

    In addition to the organ, the church also contains 15th century carvings on the choir stalls, and the tomb of Rembrandt's wife. A guided tour is available to climb the tower named Oude Kerk, prices are reasonable and it is easily accessible.

    Important Dates

    There are plenty of big events taking place in Amsterdam in the month of November and they start with the first Saturday and Museum Night. Amsterdam has numerous wonderful museums, but visitors can get a slightly different take on this weekend by visiting them at night.

    From 7pm to 2am, approximately 40 of Amsterdam's museums open their doors to throw a party. One ticket will get visitors into every museum and they go on sale in mid-October. This is a very big night for both tourists and locals, so it is important to get in line early.

    Arrival of Saint Nicholas

    The middle of the month is the time for the arrival of Saint Nicholas. The holiday season officially begins with the arrival of Saint Nicholas by boat to the Amsterdam Harbor.  Along with St. Nick's arrival is a parade and ceremony where he is officially welcomed back to town by Amsterdam's mayor.
