The weather in Almeria in September is characterised by gradually decreasing temperatures as summer ends and autumn begins.

This makes it an ideal month to visit the resort without the larger summer crowds and still enjoy the beautiful beaches and Mediterranean coastline. For an alternative to the beach, the inland areas of Almeria are beautiful and tranquil. The Majada Redonda resort in Presillas Bajas is set in the nature reserve of Cabo de Gata and offers a relaxing escape from the busy beaches in the warm September month. Almeria Beaches for September

While the summer season may have ended, September is still warm enough to enjoy the beaches when they are less crowded outside the traditional holiday months. With average sea temperatures of 230C, it is a good time to go for a swim or relax and enjoy the beaches in the area. At this quieter time of year, head to the usually busy Poniente coast, on the western region of the Almeria coast. Many of the beaches in this area, such as Roquetas de Mar beach, have achieved the European blue flag award for cleanliness and they have all the facilities to be expected from popular Spanish beach resorts.

There are many activities to keep everyone busy in this region, including golf, nature reserves and rural tourism with Moorish heritage that has survived here for many centuries. Nature reserves include the Posidonia coral reef and the Adra Lagoons natural reserve with opportunities to watch birds and wildlife in their natural habitat.

Bars and Restaurants

Located in the city centre, but offering outside dining, in the warm September evenings, head to Teteria Almedina for lunch or dinner. Located in the old town, this small Arabian influenced tearoom has great North African cuisine and helpful, friendly staff who can advise you on the best dishes for your palate. With live music every Saturday and henna workshops, this is a great place to experience something different when visiting this area.

A good restaurant to eat at in the city of Almeria is Casa Joaquin, located in the old town. Although there is no menu, the friendly and helpful staff will inform guests of the dishes available that day, and offer help in deciding what to choose. With great salads, tapas, fish, seafood and meat dishes on offer, this restaurant also has a quality wine list and beers to accompany the meal. Quality dining and attentive service make this a great place to have lunch or dinner.

When visiting the nearby resort of Roquetas del Mar, have a drink at Chaplin's Bar, located close to the beach. This friendly, laid-back pub is the perfect place for a drink with friends or to socialise with regulars at the bar. Run by an English couple, this pub shows live sports on TV, serves great tapas and a selection of beers and wines. 

Things to do in Almeria in September

For something a little different, go to the Monastery of the virgin of Saliente. Located outside of the town area, the drive up there alone is worthwhile with olive groves and stunning views of the area. Built in the 18th century, this beautiful old building has interesting architecture, a restaurant with views of the vista and a picnic area. Open every day except Tuesday, this is an interesting day out from the main town or beaches.

On warmer September days, head to the coast for some sailing lessons with a company such as Sailing sur school. With courses designed for adults and children, this is a fun way to spend the day or get more involved and do a longer course. English is spoken on board and no prior experience is necessary. Learn how to navigate and get your bearings on the sea and see the beautiful coastline with beaches and coves to explore.
