Miami, located in the United States sunny state of Florida, is one of America’s favourite holiday destinations. With a busy port that is rammed full of glamorous cruise liners year round, Miami is a popular destination for those who enjoy a subtropical escape from wherever in the world they hale from.

The weather in Miami is something that many visitors may be unsure about. Due to its proximity to the tropics, Florida has long been subject to hurricanes and tropical storms. However, this should be at the bottom of your list of concerns when thinking about visiting Miami- with packing sunscreen and a bikini being the top of your worries!

Firstly, tropical storms occur in Miami about once every 4 years.. and if you time your visit outside of the hurricane season then you’ll be ‘right as rain.’ To ease your mind even more major hurricanes (which are Category 3 or higher) occur even less frequently- there has only been 15 hurricane measuring over category 3 since 1851.

Miami has something to offer at every time of the year, but the annual weather is best split up into dry periods and wet periods. Rainfall in Miami is at its highest during June, August and September, with it really beginning to pick up around May- which is also when the mercury begins to rise making for quite an uncomfortable level of humidity at times.

In April, the average monthly rainfall sits at 81mm for the month, before picking up to 173mm by May, and 234 mm by October. It then drops dramatically by November when it average precipitation is measured at about 71mm.

The ‘winter’ months of December, January and February see average highs of about 23 to 24 degrees- not exactly what you would expect for winter weather! Average daily minimums throughout winter fall to a pretty comfortable 16 degrees, with a pleasurable 8 hours of daily sunlight.

Due to Miami’s proximity to the equator to sun lies directly overhead for much of the year meaning that average daily sunlight doesn’t vary much month to month, the the minimum daily sunlight being 7 hours and maximum in the height of summer being 9 hours.

June, July and August in Miami see the mercury rise and the weather become much warmer. Maximum temperature in July and August sits at an average of 31 degrees and minimums fall to 24 degrees. Humidity in the mornings is about 75 percent falling to 68 percent by the evenings. The humidity and heat can sometimes prove to be quite uncomfortable but you can be assured that the ocean, a swimming pool or a beautiful air-conditioned resort is not too far away.

Summers can get hot and winters vary rarely get extremely cold- so Miami is a great get away year round. In saying this however back in 1977 Miami received its first ever and only ever record snowfall!

On January 19, 1977 the city was briskly washed with very light flurries during a freak blizzard. This has only ever occurred once and residents are certainly not holding their breath for it to happen again! In fact- the coldest ever temperature recorded in Miami is a fairly bearable -1 degrees!

So while Miami may be the retirement capital of the United States, it has a buzzing nightlife, a cosmopolitan city and an envious subtropical climate to keep you busy during your stay!
