Venice, ‘the city of water’ is located in the north of Italy upon the marshy Venetian Lagoon which lies adjacent to the Adriatic Sea in northeast the country. Venice stretches across 118 small islands between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers.

Venice is most well known for its canals which weave through the shallow lagoon. The unique city is Europe's largest urban car free area- in the old part of town, the 150 canals replace roads, and every form of transport is on water or on foot

Because the city basically floats on a web of canals (much like Amsterdam) it is therefore subject to high humidity year round. This humidity when combined with the summer heat can lead to fairly uncomfortable weather conditions. Despite this, July and August are very busy tourism months and the city becomes almost entirely booked out, so if you choose to endure the heat, humidity and throngs of tourists, be sure to book ahead!

Summer

Summer in Venice begins in June, which also sees slightly more precipitation than the other summer months. June sees average highs of 25 degrees and lows of 16 degrees, before hitting the summer highs in July and August where average maximums are in the high 20’s and the mercury can often rise above 30 degrees.

Summer however (like a lot of the year) sees steady rainfall, so the evening showers can come as a much needed relief from the heat. When you throw humidity in the summer mix the result is frequent dramatic thunderstorms which crash in the skies above the romantic canals.

The canals and streets are packed with tourists during the summer months making the most of the long sunny days and unique ambience that Venice offers.

Winter

January and February in fact see the lowest monthly precipitation on average, but witness an average daily temperature of a chilly 3 to 5 degrees. The average minimum throughout the midst of winter falls to a chilly -1 degrees Celsius.. so come prepared with gloves, scarves and warm coasts if you plan on cruising the town in the famous Venetian gondolas.

There are many clear, sunny crisp days throughout winter which are perfect for sight seeing. Keep in mind that when the Adriatic winds blow they can be bitterly cold as they cross the waters of the canals and wash over the city.

If you can avoid peak season in Venice then it is recommended that you do so. The best times to visit the city are March through until June, or on the other side of summer- September and October.

During these times you will see plenty of clear days and sunshine whilst avoiding the peak tourist season, high humidity, and also the unpredictable disturbed winter conditions. See the average conditions for Autumn and Spring

Venice experiences unpredictable conditions all year round, one moment it will be sunny and amazing and suddenly the blue sky is taken over by grey gloomy clouds. However, everyone knows that Venice isn’t a city you visit for the weather, it is a unique and historical city with a large array of sights and sounds to experience.

While during your stay, regardless of what time of the year you visit, you are definitely likely to se e our fair share of sunny clear days, however it is best to come equipped with a little bit of everything so to ensure you are ready to tackle whatever weather Venice decides to throw at you!
