Weather Overview for Kos

Kos is a Greek Island located 4km off the coast of Turkey in the North Eastern Aegean Sea. It is part of the South Sporades group of the Dodecanese Greek Islands, and enjoys a climate that is typified by a combination of semi-tropical and Mediterranean conditions.

Kos is a sunny island which experiences long, hot dry summers and mild gentle winters. Like many of the Greek Islands the shoulder seasons of Autumn and Winter are a popular time to visit as holiday makers avoid the peak crowds and scorching temperatures that the summer months attract.

Summer in Kos begins around May with temperatures averaging 21 degrees, before moving up to an average temperature of 25 degrees by June. July and August see Kos experiences the hottest temperatures and it is not uncommon for the region to experience temperatures in excess of 40 degrees, though it barometer generally hovers around the mid to low 30’s.

Like most of Greece, the region is blessed with sunny days- with the height of summer seeing up to 12 hours of uninterrupted sunlight. The break from the sometimes oppressive heat comes in the evenings when the temperature cools down significantly.

If you are not a fan of the hot weather it is best to visit Kos in the shoulder season of Spring and Autumn, where the climate is pleasant- warm days, cool evenings and minimal rainfall. The benefit of visiting during this time is that you avoid the peak summer crowds, and luckily the sea is still warm so swimming is possible!

Winters are mild, with the coolest months being January and February when the mercury falls to about 10 degrees. There is sporadic rain throughout October to May, with the majority falling in December. The island still sees, on average, 4 to 5 hours of sunlight per day during winter which is enviable comparative to many other European winter holiday destinations.

By March the rainfall has decreased and the island welcomes Spring. March sees an average daily temperature of 12 degrees, before rising to 15 degrees in April and a pleasant 20 degrees in May.
