Thassos is a mountainous Greek island blessed with a number of beautiful beaches and surrounded by picturesque scenery and a vast history.

Thassos is almost perfectly round in shape and is located about 7km from the mainland. The population is around 14,000 people spread out over 18 villages and towns for visitors to explore.

The average high temperature during the day in August is around 28°C (82°F). It’s really very warm at this time of the year and visitors will find that it’s very comfortable to be outside.

The nighttime low to be expected in August is around 19°C (66°F)- nice and cool but still warm enough to enjoy many outdoor activities late into the evening.

August is perhaps the busiest month of the summer in Thassos so visitors are advised to book their trip well in advance to avoid the problem of not being able to find suitable accommodations.

August is a wonderful time to visit the mountainous regions of Thassos, like Potamia, which are not particularly rugged in most areas. There are also several inland towns that are connected to coastal towns (by way of ‘skalas’ or stairways) that many visitors find intriguing.

Of course, no trip to Thassos would be complete without a visit to the Archeological Museum and to the archaeological sites in Ancient Agora. There is also a very interesting Folklore Museum in Theologos.

There are two main festivals/events in Thassos in August. The first is the Feast of the Assumption (Koimisis tis Theotokou). It’s held on the 15th and is a national holiday so most public services such as banks will be shut down and unavailable.

The second is the Festival of Philippi-Thassos. This is also a national event that celebrates Greeks in the Arts. It is generally held from the first week of July until the Last week of August.
