Tourism begins to hit full swing as May approaches in Sunny Beach, and again, during this time you can still grab some seriously bargainous deals on holidays, just before the peak season of July and August hits.

May is certainly a wonderful time to visit this region of Bulgaria, with a very pleasant average temperature of 17°C, even reaching a high of 21°C during the hottest times of the month. Indeed, the average low is only around 12°C, which certainly tells you that summer is beginning to arrive, also shown by the average of 12 hours of sun experienced per day during this time of year

If you enjoy water-sports and swimming, the good news is that the Black Sea is finally beginning to warm up, with a May water temperature average of around 16°C. If you’re worried about rain, this isn’t the biggest problem in May, as there is no major spike in rainfall, staying at a typical level as for the rest of the year, with an average of 42mm, affecting 6 days during the month of May.

May is the ideal time to visit the major tourist attractions in and around Sunny Beach, before the major crowds and heat arrive in the coming few months.

Where to stay

May is the official start of the tourist summer season in Sunny Beach and this means more choice of accommodation opening up for visitors. Sunny Beach is home to many large hotels, several of which offer an all-inclusive option, which is perfect for travelling with children. Iberostar Sunny Beach Resort Hotel is a great four star option, with several small pools and one large one, for a cool down from the growing temperatures, as well as a choice of a sea view if you so wish.

Tiara Beach is another great all-inclusive option, which is just 100m from the beach itself, as well as offering close proximity to the tourist train, which is a great fun way to get around. You could also look at Royal Castle, which offers several board options, with an on-site Italian restaurant, a winery, and a garden bar for your evening’s entertainment.

What to do

The sea temperature of the Black Sea is now up to par, and it’s the ideal to head out and enjoy some beach and water-based fun! There are several beaches around Sunny Beach, including the main sweeping stretch of sand, and it’s an ideal opportunity to enjoy some water-sports. Freestyle Wakeboard Spot is for you if you fancy trying something new, with experienced instructors on hand to help you out. Alternatively, there are parasailing, jetskiing, and diving opportunities on the main beach at Cacao.

For something a little different you could head out onto the Black Sea itself and enjoy the resort from a different viewpoint by taking part in a catamaran cruise. You’ll find several companies all offering various different tours, including moonlight trips if you fancy something a little more romantic!

With all this being said however, without a doubt the most popular activity in Sunny Beach during the summer months is Action Aquapark. This is a favourite with kids and big kids alike and is the best option for a family day out. This is a large park with several pools and slides, entertainment, and food options on-site, and is certainly there for a full day out. The perfect way to tire out the little ones!

Hit the beach

May officially means summer, and that means summer beach fun! Cacao Beach in the centre of Sunny Beach is the place to be when summer arrives, and with 8km of fine sand, with a few natural sand dunes here and there, this is the centre-point of daily life in resort.

There are plentiful restaurants and bars around, as well as water-sports to enjoy. If you enjoy water skiing, banana boat, parasailing etc, then this is the beach for you.

Eating & drinking out

If you’re planning on heading out and experiencing the bright lights of Sunny Beach’s nightlife then you need to line your stomach first, and you have plenty of options to choose from. If you love a good steak then you should certainly head to Lapa Lapa. With a varied menu to suit most palates there is plenty to choose from, however the restaurant is particularly famous for its steak dishes.

You might be wanting to enjoy entertainment and a meal and in that case Khan’s Tent is a hugely popular night out. This is a dinner and show event, with a variety show and live band every night whilst you eat your meal. Food and drinks are very reasonably priced, and you will probably find that your holiday rep sells tickets for this establishment, which shows you how popular it is.
