Resort Profile
Seasoned skiers and snowboarders are always on the lookout for the best snow riding adventures our planet has to offer. Every year, more and more of them are getting ready to fulfill their dreams and experience the ultimate form of skiing or snowboarding: Heli-Skiing!
Nowhere in the world is the combination of terrain, weather, temperatures and snow conditions as ideal for Heli-Skiing as in the numerous unpopulated mountain ranges of British Columbia. Since the start of the TLH operation in 1991, an ever growing number of skiers and snowboarders are visiting. Here, in the magnificent Chilcotin Mountains, they find the place to enjoy an outstanding Heli-Skiing vacation. The operation has the perfect combination of luxurious western-style lodging and the best powder skiing imaginable. After having used the marketing name 'Tyax Lodge Heliskiing' for several years, thay have recently reverted back to the incorporated company name 'TLH Heliskiing'.
TLH are one of very few operations that provides accommodation in a remote mountain lodge, where the helicopters are ready for our guests every morning just outside their doorsteps. This is a tranquil mountain setting where neither trains nor highway traffic will prevent you from fully enjoying your well-deserved vacation of a lifetime.
All of the regular packages are in fact Deluxe Semi-Private Packages because TLH always ski with a maximum of only two groups per helicopter! It lets everyone experience more varied terrain and untracked powder runs every day. There are no daily bus rides to cope with to get to and from the skiing in the morning and in the afternoon. Also, waiting times for the helicopter are all but eliminated.
After skiing, enjoy the many amenities of our unique mountain lodge. Let yourself be pampered with delicious meals and relax in the Cowboy Bar or in front of the huge river-rock fireplace.
Vertical Footage:
The average footage skied per week is approximately 130,000 vertical feet (39,600 vertical meters). Well over 200,000 vertical feet (61,000 vertical meters) have been skied in a week, while on occasions, only 70,000 vertical feet (21,300 vertical meters) have been managed. The amount of skiing is determined by several factors: the skiing ability of guests, the amount they desire to ski, the weather and snow conditions, and the available daylight hours.
Mountain Lake Resort, the base for TLH Heliskiing, is located on the shores of Tyaughton Lake. The heli-pads are conveniently located right at the lodge, allowing you to be transported in minutes into our extensive ski area within the Southern Chilcotin Mountains of British Columbia.
Our Ski Area:
To the west lies a vast expanse of glaciers, remnants from the Ice Age, which still cover hundreds of square kilometers. To the east lies the rolling, dry Fraser Plateau. TLH Heliskiing operates in the transition zone providing the best of all worlds — magnificent mountains, an abundance of dry powder snow and plenty of sunshine.
To date we have in excess of 300 runs in an area of 830,000 acres. That's 3,500 km2 (1,300 miles2), or roughly 200 times the size of the ski area of Vail, Colorado.
Snowfall:
TLH claim average annual snowfall at 5,900 feet (1,800 meters) is approximately 45 to 60 feet (14 to 18 meters) which leaves an average base of 10 to 12 feet (3 to 4 meters) of snow on the ground. It's not unusual to find 16 feet (5 meters) or more of snow at higher elevations on the glaciers.
Temperatures:
Temperatures are generally well suited for skiing and range from -5°C to -15°C (23°F to 5°F). At worst, there can be short spell of rain or periods when the temperature can drop to -40ºC (-40ºF).
Snow Conditions:
Records show that during 75% of the TLH season the snow conditions are good to outstanding. Although, you must be aware that Heli-Skiing is not always perfect and conditions may occasionally be very challenging.
The guides are always striving to seek out the best possible snow and runs for our guests. With such an enormous ski area at our disposal, the choices are so numerous that good conditions can usually be found.
On average, it is only about one-half a day per week that conditions prevent skiing at TLH Heliskiing.
