Averages for Santorini in May
May sees the summer season truly kick off in Santorini. The hotels start to re-open and holiday makers of all ages start to flock here to enjoy the beautiful weather and stunning scenery.
Daytime temperatures now reach a very pleasant high of 22°C (72°F) and only fall to around 15°C (59°F) in the evenings. You can expect a massive 11 hours of sunshine and there is virtually no chance of rain, with the average during May being just 14mm.
There are plenty of beaches to choose from in Santorini, with Kamari and Perissa on the east of the island being the most popular. Both beaches offer miles of dark volcanic sand and are lined with cafes, shops and tavernas for your convenience. The waters here are ideal for both swimming and for a range of water sports.
They can become crowded so if you want somewhere more secluded you can head to Amoudi, Armeni and Baxedes beaches, although these are harder to reach and are often found to have strong currents so may not be ideal for families.
Away from the beach you can visit the remarkably well preserved ancient sites of Thera and Akrotiri, where you will find plenty of buildings such as temples, homes and a theatre.
There’s much more accommodation available at this time of year so you’ll definitely find something to suit you.
The Anastasis Apartments on the north of the island offers a range of self catering apartments with stunning views of the ocean as well as an outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi.
And Zorzis Hotel in Perissa boasts an ideal location right by the beach and close to shops, bars and restaurants. The charming traditional building houses rooms that overlook an outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi set in tropical gardens.
