Weather Overview for Santa Ponsa
Santa
Ponsa is a popular holiday resort on Majorca’s south west coast, in Spain’s Balearic
Islands. It is less than 10kms west of Magaluf and not from the islands capital Palma.
Santa
Ponsa enjoys a typically Mediterranean
climate with long hot summers and mild winters. The warm surrounding seas
help dictate this climate, especially in keeping winter temperatures so mild. The
climate has helped make the island so popular with tourists and Santa Ponsa enjoys
more than 300hrs of sunshine a year and sees only 400mm of rain a year.
The sea
surrounding Santa Ponsa is warm year round, a principle reason for the mild
winters. The surface temperature of the sea varies between 14 ºC in winter and
26 ºC in summer, and it is generally comfortable for swimming from late May to
late autumn.
SUMMER
Summer is when people flock to Santa Ponsa and the weather
is
typically hot and dry with plentiful sunshine. The main summer months of June,
July and August receive just 10% of the annual rainfall. July and August are the hottest
months of the year and see daily highs above 30C. The great summer
weather often starts in late May and lasts through until September.
Summer
temperatures can sometimes get very high - up into the mid 30s and even beyond.
Thankfully the coastal location allows for relief from cooling sea breezes on
the hottest days. The Embat is a well
known local wind that brings cooler sea air. It is caused when hot air rises up
from Majorca’s
landmass and draws in the cooler sea air in its place. It is very welcome on
the hottest days.
Sunshine
is abundant in summer and its great beach weather on the island. Santa Ponsa
enjoys up to 11 hours of sunshine per
day in mid-summer.
WINTER
The winters are mild in Santa Ponsa and see average
temperatures around 9 to 10C. Lows may drop to 4C at night but daytime highs
are frequently in the mid teens in winter and you’ll enjoy 5 hours of sunshine per
day on average.
As for rainfall, you
can expect to see it in winter although at around 40mm a month on average it is
not particularly high. You may get some wet and windy weather in winter but is
not frequent and is normally short lived.
In
general, winter sees a lot of good weather and plenty of sunshine with
comfortable daytime temperatures.
You’ll get rain but not a lot, and cold temperatures are rare.
SPRING/AUTUMN
These two
seasons enjoy some great weather and if you factor in the fewer visitors and
cheaper prices they can arguably be the best time to visit. Of the two seasons
autumn is slightly warmer, but spring is drier. In fact spring sees the driest
weather of the year and autumn the wettest (although its not that wet).
Early
autumn enjoys high temperatures and the summer weather effectively remains
until late September at the earliest. Daily highs
average in the upper 20s in September and in the low 20s in October. November does
start to get a little chillier and can see single figure temperatures at night,
although daily highs are still up towards 20C.
Autumn is
the wettest time and can see more than 60mm a month on average. This
is still relatively low however and that’s reflected in the fact that the days
still average 6 or 7 hours of sunshine.
In spring
March is still cool at night and in the early morning but the daytime
temperatures quickly increase. By April temperatures can be up to 20 in the
day, and May can see highs in the mid 20s. Spring is dry with plenty of
sunshine – averaging
9hrs per day in April and May.
