The Puerto Rican weather in September is much the same as in August, with temperatures ranging from 22-31 degrees celsius, water at a warm 29 degrees and heavy rainfall expected throughout the June-November hurricane season. The humidity is sky high, as is the UV index.

To take advantage of the warm water, adrenaline junkies and water sports fans should hit the waves (though be sure to keep an eye on the local weather announcements for any storm warnings). Rincón on the west coast of the island is one of the best places for surfing as the sea is a bit rougher, providing ideal conditions. The Villa Antonio in Rincón provides secluded and intimate accommodation in a choice of beachfront cottages from only £61 per night. Sleeping up to four people, this hotel is a great choice for families, especially as children under 12 stay for free.

For those who’d rather take things a little easier, a stroll around the historic Old San Juan area is fascinating. The narrow cobblestone streets and 16th Century Spanish-inspired properties bring a definite old European feel to this otherwise Americanised island. The San Juan National Historic Site describes the area as the ‘Gibraltar of the Caribbean’ and grants access to the Castillo San Cristóbal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro forts for just £4.
