Riviera Maya, Mexico gradually warms up in March, when the average temperature is around 25°C. In this month, highs of up to 29°C are common during the warmest part of the day, cooling down to around 23°C after dark. The number of rainy days drops down to three in March and the humidity decreases very slightly to 78%. The sea temperature is a pleasant 26°C and there are approximately nine hours of sunshine each day.
Riviera Maya’s tropical climate means there is very little variation in the weather throughout the year. As March is part of the dry season, tourists here at this time of year can enjoy the hot weather without the intense heat and humidity that comes in the wet season.
Dates for the diary
The Riviera Maya Food & Wine Festival is held every year around the third week of March and is a great event for the whole family to enjoy. At this festival you’ll have the chance to try traditional Mexican food and drink, as well as watch demonstrations carried out by internationally-renowned chefs.
The Chichen Itza Serpent of Light takes place during the Equinox in March, at the historical site of Chichen Itza. During this event, the Earth’s equator crosses into the centre of the sun’s path, creating serpent patterns of light and shadows on the temple at dusk. This incredible experience can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages – don’t forget to bring your camera.
Things to do
Families and couples will have a great time at the Punta Laguna Nature Reserve near the Gulf Coast. Set in a large nature reserve, this park covers 5,000 hectares and features zip lines, rappels and lagoons. Most people visit in the morning, so if you plan your trip for around 2pm, you’ll have the park almost to yourself. There are a number of guides to be found throughout the site who are happy to take groups on tours of the best parts of the reserve.
If you’d like to see more natural attractions, visit Chaak Tun in Playa del Carmen to see one of the best underground cave networks in Riviera Maya. Here you’ll find a number of jungle paths leading to caverns and lagoons which are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving. If you want to go on a guided tour, it’s best to visit around 3pm after most of the visitors have already left. This way you will have plenty of time to explore the cenotes at your own pace.
Hit the beach
Take advantage of the fantastic weather and spend a day or two at the beach. Naturists will have a great time at Hidden Beach Resort in Kantenah, where clothing is option. This adults-only bay is the ideal location to enjoy sunbathing, beach games and sports in the nude. You’ll find a great selection of amenities here, including sun loungers, parasols, showers, boat hire and a choice of water sports.
If you can’t wait to try out some water sports, visit the Central beach at Playa del Carmen. Lined with a number of dive shops, bars and restaurants, this bay provides every kind of water sport you can think of, including pedalo hire, boat hire, scuba diving, snorkelling, parasailing and jet skiing. Visitors have access to a number of facilities at this white sand beach, including sun loungers, shades, showers, restaurants and bars.
Where to eat & drink
Altamar Restaurante in Tulum is a great place to go if you want to try the local cuisine. Offering a number of Mexican dishes, this eatery is very popular amongst families, thanks to the generous portion sizes. The sea platter is one of the most popular dishes and features a selection of fresh seafood and fish, including lobster, octopus, prawns and white fish.
Seafood lovers won’t want to miss the chance to visit La Mission in Playa del Carmen. Surrounded by tropical gardens and Mayan ruins, this eatery serves a top selection of fresh fish and seafood dishes. If you’re not in the mood for fish, there are plenty of other choices on offer, including meat-based and vegetarian meals. The restaurant follows an “If you don’t like it, you don’t pay for it” policy, so you can try whatever you want without worrying about not liking it.
If you’re looking for a place to party until dawn, visit La Santanera in Playa del Carmen. Comprising of two sections, this club features one chill out lounge and one open-air dance area, creating the perfect place for a night out. The resident DJ is often accompanied by some of the resort’s biggest and best artists who always create a fantastic atmosphere every night of the week.
Beetle Love Mojito & Juice Bar in Tulum is a mobile bar service held on a VW Beetle with its own sugar cane crusher used to make fresh sugar cane juice. This juice is one of the main ingredients in their mojitos which are some of the best in Riviera Maya, Mexico. As well as their famous mojitos, this bar also serves a selection of alcohol-free cocktails for the kids to enjoy.
Where to stay
